How I met my husband

There's a somebody I'm longing to see
I hope that he
turns out to be
someone who'll wax my kili-kili

After nearly ten years of marriage plus three years of friendship, I've found out that Jeroen is the solution to my armpit hair.
Boy, can he wax good. I found out after Veet sent me boxes of wax strips. It takes Jeroen like five minutes. He has no mercy. He slaps the wax strip on my armpit, pats it while I try not to die from giggling, and pulls it with when I'm not even ready.

Veet

This reminds me of how we fell in love.
Some of you may be following the show "How I Met Your Mother." I have never seen the episode but thinking of watching at some point.

Jeroen and I had been hanging out as friends (read: barkada) for months with a third wheel called Lucas Levigne, who is now back in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
One day Jeroen and I were in the back of the van without Lucas, when Jeroen got gigil, pinned me down and started tickling me.
Take note that Jeroen is six feet tall, while I was 95-lbs. at 5'2".
Weak and defenseless while getting tickled to death, I did what I had to do. I took a cue from my brother and decided to spit on Jeroen's face.
This shocked him and made him laugh uncontrollably. He also stopped tickling me.
And that was the day he said he knew I was the one.

Thirteen years later, I am a happy camper and my armpits are as smooth as a baby's behind.
(Too bad I have batwings for triceps, so I can never go sleeveless.)

An open letter to Noynoy by F. Sionil José

Dear Noynoy,

You are now swamped with suggestions and advice, but just the same, I hope you’ll have time to read what this octogenarian has to say.

You were not my choice in the last election but since our people have spoken, we must now support you and pray that you prevail. But first, I must remind you of the stern reality that your drumbeaters ignore: you have no noble legacy from your forbears. It is now your arduous job to create one yourself in the six years that you will be the single most powerful Filipino. Six years is too short a time — the experience in our part of the world is that it takes at least one generation — 25 years — for a sick nation to recover and prosper. But you can begin that happy process of healing.

Bear in mind that the past weighs heavily on all of us because of the many contradictions in it that we have not resolved, whose resolutions would strengthen us as a nation. This past is now your burden, too. Let us start with the fact that your grandfather collaborated with the Japanese. Your father was deeply aware of this, its stigma, its possibilities. He did not leave any legacy because he did not become president. He was a brilliant and courageous politician. He was an enterprising journalist; he had friends in journalism who can attest to his effulgent vision, who did not profit from his friendship, among them Nestor Mata, Gregorio Brillantes — you may consult them. I cannot say I did not profit — he bought many books from my shop and when he was in Marcos’s prison, your mother brought books from my shop to him.

Forgive me for giving you this unsolicited advice. First, beware of hubris; you are surrounded by panderers who will tell you what is nice to hear. You need to be humble always and heed your conscience. When Caesar was paraded in ancient Rome before the cheering multitudes, there was always a man chanting behind him: “Remember, you are mortal.”

I say to you, remember, the poor — some of them in your own hacienda — will be your ultimate judge.

From your comfortable and privileged cocoon, you know so little of our country and people. Seek the help of the best — and the best do not normally want to work in government and neither will they approach you. You have to seek them.

Be the revolutionary your father wanted to be and don’t be scared or wary of the word “revolution.” It need not be always bloody. EDSA I was not. Your father wanted to destroy the most formidable obstacle to our progress — the Oligarchy to which you and your family belong. To succeed, you have to betray your class. If you cannot smash the oligarchy, at least strive to have their wealth develop this country, that they bring back the billions they stashed abroad. You cannot do this in six years, but you can begin.

Prosecute the crooks. It is difficult, thankless and even dangerous to do this. Your mother did not do it — she did not jail Imelda who was the partner in that conjugal dictatorship that plundered this nation. Watch her children — they were much too young to have participated in that looting but they are heirs to the billions which their parents stashed abroad. Now the Marcoses are on the high road to power, gloating, snickering at our credulity and despicable amnesia.

You know the biggest crooks in and out of government, those powerful smugglers, thieves, tax cheats — all you really need is guts to clobber them. Your father had lots of it — I hope he passed on to you most of it.

And most of all, now that you have the muscle to do it, go after your father’s killers. Blood and duty compel you to do so. Cory was only his wife — you are the anointed and only son. Your regime will be measured by how you resolve this most blatant crime that robbed us of a true leader.

And, finally, your mother. We loved her — she united us in ousting an abominable dictator. But she, too, did not leave a shining legacy for her presidency was a disaster. She announced a revolutionary government but did nothing revolutionary. She promised land reform but did not do it. And most grievous of all — she transformed the EDSA I revolution into a restoration of the oligarchy.

She became president only because her husband was murdered and you became president elect only because your mother died. Still, you are your father’s son and may you now — for the good of this country and people — scale the heights he and your mother never reached.

I am 85 and how I despair over how three generations of our leaders failed! Before I go, please let me see this unhappy country begin to be a much better place than the garbage dump our leaders and people have made it. You can be this long awaited messiah but only if you are brave enough and wise enough to redeem your father’s aborted promise.

Hopefully yours,

F. Sionil Jose

As much as we &hearts Teddy Boy Locsin (who was our boss, by the way at Daily Globe and Today), we don't appreciate him naming a shady character after an innocent, cute animal like the koala.

I refuse to call the whistle blower "koala boy" because he's not a boy noh.
He's a man, and a badly dressed one in a scary printed shirt, eyeglasses, native hat and inexplicable face mask.

SM’s Trash to Cash program encourages shoppers to recycle

“Trash to Cash” is held every first Friday and Saturday of the month at all SM Supermalls. The program invites families to bring in scrap papers and cardboard, empty ink toner cartridges, plastic bottles and scraps, used lead batteries from cars, aluminum, tin cans and many other items, in exchange for cash.
Part of the proceeds will go towards buying trash bins, which will be donated to different public schools to spread the practice of proper waste disposal to youths all over the country.
Launched three years ago, Trash to Cash has enabled SM Supermalls to save 29,000 seven-year old trees, recycle almost 700 tons of waste and save as much as 4,311 cubic meters in landfill space. At the same time, it has generated P19 million for those who have traded in their recyclables.
For its efforts in promoting recycling, SM was recognized the “Champion for Re-use/Recycle” by the Zero Basura Olympics (ZBO) during its Earth Day celebration at the SM Mall of Asia Complex.
Bestowed by the DENR Secretary Horacio C. Ramos, the award is part of the DENR's ZBO program, which recognizes the best practices in waste management and gauges companies’ compliance to RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.

The Green Bag Project

SM Supermarket, the country’s largest supermarket chain, recently celebrated its 25th anniversary by launching the Green Bag Project, encouraging the use of recyclable bags through the My Own Bag (MOB) campaign.
Since May 2009, the SM Green Bag Project has aimed to reduce the use of plastic bags which add up to the country’s waste problem.
The bags were made available to shoppers through a buy one-take one promo from its original price of PHP 35.
The SM Green Bag is made from 100% polypropylene (PP) material, which is recyclable, non-toxic, allergy free and non-reactive to human skin. The SM Green Bag’s size is equivalent to two regular SM Supermarket Shopping bags and has an estimated lifespan of two years.

How hard is it to Google a decent image of Mark Gil in his prime?
Apparently next to impossible. This torture scene from the movie "Batch '81" was the best I came up with.

CTC-4874-image6

When we were kids, Mark Gil was one of those actors who could get away with just underwear. Considered a kind of sex symbol, he became romantically involved with actress (and ex-wife) Jaclyn Jose bore him a daughter Andi Eigenmann.

Now grown up, Andi Eigenmann continues the family tradition and stars in her own fantasy drama series, Agua Bendita.

As a writer I get a serious amount of beauty products and gadgets to try out. Some of them get stocked for a long time until I have the need and start searching for them in the pile.
Well, my internet provider conked out again, so while waiting for repairs to happen, I pulled out this Wi-Tribe 4G someone sent me.

W-Tribe 4G

I just unpacked it from the box, and without reading the manual, connected the ethernet cable to my Time Capsule, plugged it in and started started surfing wirelessly. It's even faster than the service provider I've been using for ten years.
The speed isn't quite there as my gauge for quick Internet is if Flickr Uploader works fast. But I'm happy with it.
From what I heard the service works only in Metro Manila but is being expanded to the whole of Luzon.
It works without a telephone line.
The modem can be purchased at PHP 998 and its monthly service fee is also at PHP 998, but you can opt for a faster upgrade.
I also heard that you are allowed to test drive the unit in your home or office before you commit. If you're happy with the signal and the speed, then you can sign up for a plan.
If your Internet conks out whenever it rains or whenever some thief decides to steal copper wires from the underground, this is a great backup to have or as a main service provider. Watch:

Four years ago, I was one of the stylists working on the Bench Fever underwear show.
One of the challenges I faced was how to bring out the best in each model. At first sight you might not have casted Charisse at the go-see

Charisse before

But I saw that even though she had lifeless hair and sparse eyebrows, she had nice features and a perfect body.
The solution: a baseball cap, a ponytail and a funky top over Bench underwear.

Charisse after

Though I'm not styling this year, I'm participating in the Bench underwear olympics this year by covering events and watching the show. Yesterday they let me sit in the final go-see to help select the models for this year's show.

IMG_4608

For a few hours I got to escape the heat for the aircon at the Edsa Shang ballroom was full-blast. Pity the undressed models in the waiting room. I had a fun time with the panel which included Bench head stylist Noel Manapat, architect Miguel Pastor, top model Georgina Wilson, Arsi Baltazar of GMA Artist Center, Mr. Ben Chan, (no explanation necessary), director Robby Carmona, talent manager Keren Pascual, and Bryan Lim, Vice President Suyen Corp. (Not to mention, the dimsum merienda was yum!)

The panel

Georgina Wilson will be joining the underwear show this year. She sat next to me so I saw her scores, hehe.
Let's just say her choices had to pass through the eye of a needle.

Georgina Wilson

Scoring was done as Y (yes), N (no) or M (maybe)—but Noel said "M" means 'mask', meaning puede na rin.
I said, puede bang "H" for 'hipon'? It is possible to look chica even with a mask, right Jujiin?

koala man chica

The model wannabes came from as far as Yorkshire, UK to Lucena City.
When the model has a foreign accent, plus 10 points from me. If regional accent, minus 2, jeje.
Only a few models had a unanimous Yes score, including "yes to death" as coined by Arsi and Georgina.

IMG_4689

while some had a dismal unanimous "No" with a pair of "(are you) serious?" marks.
Seriously a couple of applicants I felt were Mr. Bean, either joking us or being dared to audition, a la William Hung. My jaw started to hurt after a while as I was trying to stop myself from laughing at my seat mates' comments. Not saying I am innocent! I made comments too.

IMG_4724

Let's check out the guys. Here's a pair of twins from Persia.

These guys stripped onstage. At right is my BFF's nephew Enzo Pineda.

I saw this guy fully clothed after the go-see. He's cute even with clothes.

Almost James Yap

IMG_4786

and nearly Keempee

IMG_4718

Ok this guy was from Yorkshire, so plus 10!

IMG_4645

There were not enough girls, but I don't see a problem as the Bench underwear show is really about the guys (no offence)!
Manila ain't Brazil you know, where you could cast 120 models on the beach.
Luckily some Brazilians saved the day.

IMG_4709 IMG_4712

IMG_4704 IMG_4707

Plus a couple of Filipinas. Mia Ayesa (R) looks so fit!

IMG_4698 IMG_4697

Oh, and I need a new camera! I've realized my Canon S90 isn't good for runway shots.
I'm so psyched for the underwear show in July. Are you?

Huwaw!
