Costume designer, stylist, and fashion designer Patricia Field recently unveiled a four-leaf clover charm necklace under the Patricia Field for Payless designer label.
The silver-toned necklace featuring a four-leaf clover charm encrusted with multiple pavé-set sparkly jewels was worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in a scene from Sex and the City 2.

The charm hangs from an 18-inch delicate textured cable chain with a lobster claw clasp and a two-inch extender, allowing the necklace to be worn long or short with a range of necklines to emphasize the unique, sparkly clover charm.
In Sex and the City 2 Sarah Jessica Parker wore the charm necklace with a Dior Gazette dress and a BEAVALES crystal "Bella" bag.

Trumpets needs to get their act together

From the first time we tried to enroll, it already felt wrong.

This summer we planned to keep the boys busy by signing them up in a junior basketball league and street dancing at Trumpets.
My son Ben has expressed interested in becoming an actor. As a mom, I want my boys to grow up with confidence on the dance floor and not dorky. As early as two years ago I already started them dancing during summer. But the boys weren't happy with the first school because they had to wear funny costumes (read: long skirts, don't ask) during recital.

I found out Trumpets was going to hold workshops at Podium—super convenient for us. So I called in advance to ask up to what time they're open. I made sure to arrive 15 minutes before said time, but when I got there, they had already packed up.
I tried again for a second time, and sure enough they packed up too early.
The third time, I finally got my two boys in. Paid the tuition, then I enlisted three more playmates to join them. The more the merrier—so that's Ben, Markus, Diego, Emilio and Luis.

The boys bonded through summer attending these classes and playing afterwards.
Now comes the recital which would have been today.
Not too long ago, our helper Mariza came home with a sheet of paper announcing rehearsal and recital times with matching call times.
Since the paper wasn't clear as to what section or what time the boys were supposed to be there, I asked Mariza and Diego's yaya to clarify. They came back with this piece of paper. (Take note that neither I nor our yayas possess red markers.)

trumpets

Yesterday I reminded Jeroen about the recital, so we made plans to go there and meet the other parents of our boys. This morning there was some confusion as Markus said call time was 10 am, while the paper said 12 noon.
I texted the other parents but they were also unsure because what the yayas were saying was different from what the boys said. (Take note that yayas and parents are not allowed during classes or rehearsals. We are also dealing with kids here who do not know the answer when I ask them what section are you and what time are you supposed to be there.)

So I asked Mariza to please show me the paper again. Since someone from Trumpets had marked it, I decided to follow it.
Only one boy, Emilio, made it to the 10 am recital with a 9 am call time, while our four boys arrived at the venue at 11:45 (for a 12 noon call time and 1 pm show) only to be turned away and told that the show was over.
(Take note that Emilio's yaya did not have a piece of paper with encirclings, so Emilio's parents made it to the show.)

At this point Jeroen had already cancelled a meeting and we were on our way to the venue.
And then we got a call from Diego's dad who told us he had spoken to the teacher who said their recital had indeed been at 10 am and was over.
Confused, Diego's yaya confronted the teacher with the paper and the assistant who admitted to having encircled the wrong things.

It is now 2:42 PM and I am still fuming. We had been looking forward to this event all summer.
I just dropped the boys off to Fun Ranch to forget this happened. Pepper Lunch dinner later.
The boys are OK, it is us adults who are very disappointed.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that tickets were supposed to be distributed days before the show. I told Mariza to get the tickets in advance, but she was told yesterday at dress rehearsal that the tickets would be ready for pickup on the day of the show.
Had we received the tickets yesterday, we would have been able to make it, if it said the right time. Who knows? I haven't seen the tickets up to know.
Take note that said paper didn't have a contact number, so we couldn't confirm the time from anyone at Trumpets.

Has Trumpets has become too in demant that they have become disorganized?
To say we are disappointed is a severe understatement. I really want to kill someone but I don't know who. Do I kill Perky Parong or Amorelle Manguez?
Parents, beware of Trumpets.

Really?

Thanks anyway, whoever sent it. Cecile with an "E" please. :)

Another kind of steak

When I hear of bistecca, I think of an extra large bone-in steak with rock salt on top of it.
I haven't been eating much red meat lately, but today I really just wanted to be in good, funny company.
So when I saw Grace and Jiki tweeting about dinner tonight, I invited myself. What was supposed to be a girl's night out became dinner for seven when Jeroen decided to come along with his BFF Joris.

IMG_4932

Bistecca just opened around two weeks ago at the Joya, Rockwell Center.
It's so good, I've been hearing much about it through Twitter mentions.
True enough it was packed this Saturday night. Good thing Grace is really good at reservations.
You can tell this restaurant was well though of, starting from the darling napkins with the nice logo

IMG_4882

to the eco-friendly bottle chandeliers.

IMG_4884

Grace went ahead and pre-ordered side dishes. The minute we arrived they were already raving about these cheesy noodles in a pot, which were Dutch-approved.

IMG_4886

The second I put a truffle fry in my mouth, I knew I could never go back to McDonald's fries. I thought I died and went to heaven. I also ordered a second plate all for myself.

IMG_4888

And then a third plate was ordered.
The waiter suggested we order two kinds of steak for sharing. I don't know what they're called but I think one was prime rib and the other was T-bone.
Here's the first steak

IMG_4894

which was sliced. Note to self: order extra onions

IMG_4901

The second steak was much bigger

IMG_4897

and then sliced. (Note: the smaller steak is better. The bigger one's a bit dry.)

IMG_4902 (click to enlarge)

They give you three kinds of salt and four sauces

Here's the chef who did it.

Known for their South Beach Diet Program which has helped clients lose as much as five to 12 pounds in just two weeks, this time the Sexy Chef introduces its "Pounds Away” diet—a nutrient-dense, calorie-controlled eating program ideal for healthy weight loss.
It works on the principle of eating the right food at the right time in the right portions. It is a nutritionally balanced plan that helps the body naturally shed unwanted weight while reprogramming it to naturally balance hunger.

Delicious recipes you can enjoy on the Pounds Away diet program

Pounds Away takes into consideration your gender, age, and activity level before assigning you to a diet meal plan based on calorie levels of 1,200, 1,400, or 1,600. The diet features original recipes by Barni Alejandro using all-natural food products carefully evaluated by Nadine Tengco, a U.S. Certified Fitness Nutritionist and Weight Loss Specialist.

Gerdie

$

It's always a sad thing when I have to delete a number on my phone, because that person is gone:
Chelo Zamora, Francis Magalona, Tita Noly, Gerdie Francisco.

I met Gerdie through my friend Lia, her former schoolmate who visited Gerdie frequently and donated blood to her. She led me to Gerdie's blog where I followed her bout with cancer.
I visited Gerdie at home once and was able to say goodbye to her at Cardinal Santos Hospital before I left for Singapore this month.
I asked her to look for my cousin in heaven, tell her I miss her and I'm sorry I wasn't able to say goodbye.

Gerdie died on May 27, 2010, a few days after her 43rd birthday.

Last January 2010, Gerdie allowed me to interview her about her journey. At that time she asked me not to publish it because she wanted to make some changes, but she was never able to do it.

gerdie

Gerdie, what exactly do you have and how would you explain it in layman's terms?

I'm afflicted with Periampullary Cancer (also considered Pancreatic Cancer). It's a rare type of cancer where the primary tumor was found in the Ampulla de Vater. This body part is found where the bile duct and pancreatic duct fuses together.

How did you find out and what were the symptoms?

I had breakfast on March 1, 2008. After 30 minutes, i felt this stomach pain that somehow emanated to the back. I thought it was one of those days when I'd be hit by the usual stomach ache I've had since I was a child. Usually due to gas or hyperacidity. However, this time, the pain didn't go away. I still forced myself to go to work but halfway through, I just couldn't stand it that I decided to go home and have my housemates bring me to the hospital. When I reached home, I vomitted all I've eaten in the morning. I then thought it could be food poisoning. After that, I couldn't sip water or have any intake as I would vomit it. Medicine included. Prior to this incident, there were no symptoms.

When I got to the hospital, the emergency doctor gave me a pain killer through IV. It dulled the pain but it wouldn't go away. So the doctor tested my pancreatic enzymes. They were soaring high.
I was diagnosed of having pancreatitis. I wasn't allowed to leave the hospital but there was no room available so I asked to be transferred to Medical City. More tests were done and doctors saw that my gall bladder was inflamed. MRI/MRCP tests showed a stone blocking my billary duct. It is what caused my pancreas and my gall bladder to swell (not because of alcohol, as I rarely drink). Bile was not going down to the duodenum and I was turning yellow.

Initially, surgery would be the option to remove the stone and the infected gall bladder but eventually, my surgeon, Dr. Augusto Sarmiento, suggested that the ideal procedure was to remove the stone through ERCP and the gall bladder through surgery.
I underwent ERCP. It is amazing how technology has helped science tremendously. Doctors are able to probe and see your inner organs. Well, from what I was told, this tiny scope couldn't get past my common bile duct. A mass blocked it. It surprised my doctor and a tissue was removed for biopsy. It turned out malignant.

What kind of treatments did you pursue and how did you finance it?

The best option at that time was to operate on me. The procedure is called Whipple procedure. You may get a better explanation on this page.
I was not liquid at the time this happened. And so, a lot of people helped by raising funds. Some lent me money and I paid as able. It wasn't a joke. For three weeks at Medical City plus everything they did to me, the hospital bill cost almost a PHP 1,000,000.

My surgeon dissuaded me against chemotherapy so I didn't start on it till 2009 when the disease recurred. However, sometime July 2008, I frequented the hospital because I was experiencing back pain which later on resulted in jaundice. Apparently, my gall bladder closed and bile wasn't flowing through. I ended up in a second operation in September.
Then the cancer recurred at the onset of 2009. This time, with a vengeance. It was on Stage 4, with lung and liver metastasis. Chemotherapy was done and when it wasn't working anymore, radiation therapy was next. By the end of August, my body was so tired and weak that I opted for quality of life instead. Anyway, chemotherapy won't be able to help anymore. I started taking herbal supplements.

During the chemotherapy and radiation, money came through my brother who helped finance expenses every treatment and through what I would make through working projects. Needless to say, the Lord sent good and kind souls to help me out with the expenses too. The Lord helped me a lot during these times. Money came in just in time. I never had to beg for money. The Lord provided.

What is the worst part: discovery? Treatment? Side effects? Depression? Thoughts? Or now?

My worst part was during Radiation Therapy. At that time, I had no appetite, I had disturbed sleep, I was weak and I was depressed. I never felt so down in my life.

How long did your doctors give you and when did they give you the time frame?

My oncologist at that time, Dr. Beatrice Jayme-Tiangco, never wanted to give me a time frame during the treatment days. However, after learning that the tumors increased and multiplied even after two chemotherapy protocols and radiation therapy, I decided to stop treatment altogether and opted for quality of life. That is when she finally said that I didn't have a year. Perhaps not even six months. She told me this 1st week of October, 2008.
But at the end of the day, only the Lord can tell. Yahweh, my Heavenly Father, is the Giver of my life. He too is the Taker of it and only He knows when my time is. Meanwhile, I choose to continue to pray for a miracle. For it is only through it that I will be able to live a little while longer.

What are your days like?

For most part, I battle with back ache. The tumor near my pancreas and the recent one on my pancreatic tail are the culprits. When I am in pain, it usually lasts half a day to the whole of it. When this happens, it can be bad. Real bad. I am under pain management and I am taking Oxycontin (opium-based painkiller) and Lyrica.
I eat small frequent meals. Some days, I don't have any appetite. When I do have one, I try to eat as much as I would want to. But my stomach has limited capacity that if I eat a lot, I usually end up with pain.
Other than that, I usually feel good. As if I don't feel sick at all.

I don't work as I used to. I used to photograph weddings but that stopped as soon as the cancer recurred. Cold turkey. I stopped taking in music projects too. I couldn't concentrate hard enough to meet deadlines. I am just able to maintain my work as music editor for the shows Dear Friend and Ripley's at GMA7 Network. Thank God for that. It helps maintain my sanity and it pays for the medicines.
I am at home always unless I get bored. Then I'd request to go out. Perhaps go to Quezon City Memorial Park or to the malls. But I can't stay too long because my back would hurt after a long while.
When at home, I read my bible, spend time entertaining visitors, play with my pets or watch movies.

Did you have a bucket list of things to do before you go?

Yeah. I tried to make one. Not much, I would say. The usual, I would like to do a lot of traveling, Lord-willing. But after my trip to Singapore last November, I don't think I can travel too far anymore. It was a four-day trip with childhood friends but I ended up being sick half of the time. I was jaundiced by Day 3 and when I came home to Manila, I ended up being confined in the hospital. I left Cardinal Santos with a bag attached to me. It is where my bile goes as my bile duct is closed again.
The more important part of my list is really more of getting me to sit and write Christian songs. But my concentration has been having a real difficult time for the past year. I also would like to blog a lot. Blog about my faith in Jesus Christ and help people find Him in their lives. Those are the important ones on my bucket list. It's because I feel that my life isn't worth it if I had not spent it learning more about Jesus, experiencing Him, having a close relationship with Him and sharing this to others.
For one thing, I do not want to live a wasted life. I have seen so many people live it and I don't want to be one of them.
I guess, like the apostle Paul said in his letter to the Philippians, "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." This is my goal these days.

Have you made preparations or a will for the dying?

Oh yes. That's the first thing my oncologist told me. Better to fix things while I still can. Would you believe, at age 29, I have already bought for myself a memorial plan and memorial lot? Unfortunately, I invested my money on Legacy Consolidated Plans and so my memorial plan is now good for nothing. By God's grace, I was able to make some money and partially paid Loyola for my new memorial plan. Initially, I wanted to be cremated but later opted to be buried beside my parents at Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina.
I also had a last will and testament done. I don't have much really. I am not rich. I just want to make sure that the little that I have will go to those whom I want them to go to. Even as simple as my pet cockatiel, Dante, going to my Yaya Aylene and my lovebird, Cricket, to my best friend, Terry. Yes, I can be as OC as that.
I have also made plans as to the kind of memorial service I would like to have down to the clothes I wish to wear.

How do you make yourself go on everyday?

Jesus does. Apart from His steadfast love, faithfulness, strength and love, I am nothing.

How would you like people to remember you?

As one who is after God's own heart, primarily. As one who cares for people and as one who lived the life God wanted me to live.

What are you going to miss the most?

My household. My family and friends. But... I went on and think about it more. When I'm in Paradise, I'd probably be so awed by God's presence, I wouldn't think of those I've left behind so much in a way that I would miss them and want to go back to earth. Perhaps, it would be the other way around. I'd probably be so overwhelmed just being in Paradise that I would want them to be with me instead and we can go spend eternity worshiping the King of Kings.

Anything else?

Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts and for being a very supportive friend during this time.

After asking Boy Abunda to be Secretary of Tourism, president-elect Noy is said to be considering Dingdong Dantes and Ogie Alcasid for government posts. (Source)
This early, you can tell who's running the show (read: First Lady). And I wash my hands.
But those of you who voted for Noy should leave him alone on his smoking because you knew when you voted for him.
Noy is a package deal. It's like getting married, you can't expect a man to change after you've committed to him—duh.

Boy Abunda thankfully said he was declining the offer—for now—for financial reasons (obviously he's earning well in show biz) and he is tied with ABS-CBN till 2011. That's next year.
I've traveled with the DOT in 2006 during a trade show in Guangzhou and got to personally interview Secretary Ace Durano. I've also been a guest of the Singapore Tourism Board many times. Being a frequent traveler, I can basically tell what makes a country attractive or unattractive to tourists.

Tourism isn't just about joining trade shows and creating beautiful ad campaigns.
So what if people decide to visit our country based on pretty pictures of sun and sand, only to find out the whole experience isn't so great? They're not coming back.
As a business owner, I know that what makes a business prosper besides a good product are word of mouth and returning customers.
Same goes for tourism. People aren't gonna come if the people who have been here are not saying good things.

Here's a reality check for the incoming government and department of tourism:
(I don't have to spell it out but tourism brings lots of dollars to the country so we have to fix this department, pronto.)

1) The airport is the first and last thing a foreigner sees when entering the country. These impressions last. Please close NAIA 1.
Dear Noy, the airport bears your martyred father's name. Do you want a crappy (read: bulok) airport to bear his name or a nice airport to bear his name? Where do our airport taxes go??
Please open NAIA 3!

NAIA3

2) Taxis create another big impression on tourists. Is there any way to fix our taxi drivers? Why do they all act like killers and swindlers? Why do the rates go up when foreigners enter taxis? Why do they have the right to choose passengers and their routes?
Can we please have a good guy at Department of Transportation to fix this, like now?

3) I cannot stress enough the importance of new and clean toilets everywhere. I should really write a full article on the importance of nice toilets. Number one are the toilets at NAIA. They are so disgusting. But really, the whole place needs to be shut down.
Mall toilets need to be first class and not built at the lowest budget, because is that what you think of your customers—low class? Don't customers deserve nice smelling, clean toilets with toilet paper and good circulation?
The Department of Sanitation needs to have a rating system where they shut down disgusting toilets everywhere, beginning with NAIA 1 and the whole of Divisoria.

4) The crime rate really needs to go down. Every time a foreigner is killed or robbed in the Philippines that piece of news is echoed in parts of the world and less people will want to come.

5) Could you please shut down money changers that cheat people?

Those are just the basics, yet they've never been fixed.
The country is a mess. What a waste of nice people, beautiful sunshine and sunsets, and awesome sights if we don't fix the basic things that would make a guest feel safe and comfortable.

So dear Mr. Aquino, kindly consider your choice before you decide.
Hoping you'll choose someone who is traveled, deals with a lot of foreigners, knows what the country has to offer, is tourist-friendly, knows the arts, is qualified and has class.

May I humbly recommend...?

How come we missed this in 2008? I hate the term "cougar" almost as much as I hate "gimmick." But I have to use it now because that's what this entry is all about.
I know I'm always huli sa balita (last to know the news), but do you remember this character actor named Raymond Bagatsing back in the day?

Last heard, he had a tragic separation from his ex-wife, actress Lara Fabregas who ended up remarrying a Scottish businessman.

This was them at happier times.

It seems that Raymond Bagatsing moved to the US and continued to appear in stage plays and indie movies and lost some hair along the way.

Afraid.

In 2008 he married a 60-year-old US-based reporter named Cory Pastrana, and ooh, I would love to read a full-length story about them or watch a Maala-ala Mo Kaya drama special, how they met and married.

It would be great if it were told from Lara Fabregas' point of view and how she had the last laugh.
If Raymond were my ex and he beat me up, I would be either cringing or enjoying the turnout of events.
So here's what Lara had to say...
