My sister D, senior regional vice president of a financial services company, just arrived from Sydney and is asking me, "What the hell is a jejemon? My kids keep trying to explain it to me and I don't get it."
Ana: "I love it so much."
Me: "I'll explain it to you with one picture. Here."

Jejemon

Me: "Basically jejemon are people who text incoherently without vowels and say jeje for hehe. Don't you get text from your maid or driver that you can't understand kc wlang v0welzzz?"
D: "Oh you mean baduy people?"
Me: "XcusE mEeh. My drvr's not bAdUy noh."
D: "I still don't get it. Is it a Pokemon character?"

Behold, the Jejemon's suicide note. Basically you have to be a jejemon to understand Jejemonese.
(Warning: can cause aneurysm)

Ok that's the last time I will explain jejemon.

Before we left for Singapore, Jeroen and I visited June at Cardinal Santos Hospital.
I had to get him out of Pasig General because it has no facilities and has the grumpiest hospital staff in the world. As my dad would say, "iderecho mo na lang sa funeraria."

June needed a CT scan. It was suggested that he have it at Delos Santos Hospital, but it was election day and I had no time. Was leaving for Singapore on Wednesday.
After voting, I took him to Cardinal Santos hospital, with the help of my cousin Bunny who works there.
What a relief. The people there are better looking and much, much kinder. I believe human kindness is a great contributor to a patient's wellness.

June at Cardinal

June had his heart and abdmoninal CT scans on Tuesday ago but it was only last night when I got a text from Bunny.
"Hi. Got a copy of the scan. will ask Dr. Joseph for interpretation but as I understand, pneumonia with pericardial effusion. PTB* vs. lymphoma. Will text you again kasi gabi na out ang result."

*Tuberculosis

I got this text while eating in a Japanese restaurant with my family. When I read the word "lymphoma" I was about to cry. That's like freaking cancer. I was scared for June and scared for me. Can I afford it?
I stared at the soft-shell crab and stuffed it in my mouth.

Soft-shell crab, Inagiku

I showed Ana the text and explained the situation. I told her, "Ana, please eat the okra as a sacrifice for June?"
Ana: "Why?"
"Ayoko ng lymphoma. Please Ana."
In furnace, Ana took two bites.

Ana's sacrifice

I remembered something and texted Bunny back. "Please tell Dr. Joseph that June's cousin died last February of the same symptoms, at 2 years old in Samar. Dr. Guno of Medical City believes sickness was transferred from his cousin, so I don't think lymphoma."
Parang Grey's Anatomy.

Today I got this update from Bunny.
"Hi, just came from Joseph's clinic. Sabi niya lymphoma's out. PT's more of TB, pneumonia. Nagcoconcentrate siya now of getting rid of so much air/liquid in the stomach. PT is moderate to severe malnourished kaya mahabang gamutan."

Please continue to pray for him. They say God won't give you a cross you can't carry.
I'm just glad it's not lymphoma.

I'm so glad Google is here because when I make references Ana can't understand I can just tell her to Google it.
Ana fell in love with this plant at Inagiku. "I declare his name Bob," she said.

Ana x Bob

"Bakit Bob?" I asked. "Eh kamukha lang ni Sigmund yan."
Ana: "Who?"
Me: "Sigmund and the Sea Monsters."
Ana: "Who's that?"
Me: "Google it."
Ana googles, then: ROTFL!!

sigmund

And then...Ana looks at June and says, "ang cute."
Me: "Cute talaga. I'm glad you appreciate kids."
Ana: "Not all. They have to be cute or they have to have bangs."
Me: "Eh paano kung kamukha ni Weng Weng?"
Ana: "Who?"
Me: "Google mo."

Ana: ROTFL!!

P.S. Thanks to my influence this 18-year-old appreciates Tears For Fears, Duran Duran and Comme des Garçons.

Finally got tired of going to the mall so I dragged Ana to Little India in search of an independent store called Black Market, co-owned by Filipino designer Quincy Teofisto.

Black Market, Singapore

Last month I bumped into Quincy (left) at the Audi Fashion Festival with designer Karlo Vicente who is also currently based in Singapore.

Quincy and Karlo

Ana and I took a cab from the Grand Hyatt to 19 Jalan Pisang, near Victoria Lane.

Finally, I felt proud of Proud Race, proudly made in the Philippines, and the brainchild of partners Rik Rasos and Pat Bondoc, who had come up with this funny shirt about three years ago.

Jujiin Samonte

Proud Race is currently the bestseller at Black Market. The sales assistant told me the locals appreciate the pricepoints, while I appreciate its crude handmade quality, without the mass-produced feeling.
I couldn't resist getting this padded T-shirt, even as I tried to text Rik in the fitting room if he had it cheaper and in stock in Manila.

Proud Race at Black Market

I ended up just paying Singapore dollars for it (Rik's phone was unreachable), to support Rik and Pat, aside from really loving the piece. Ana bought a vest with giant armholes, and I, a chambray cape/shirt also by Proud Race.
Since I don't bump into Rik so often I figure I might as well get it now before Karl Lagerfeld sues!

Kampong chicken rice

My dad says Powsing chicken rice is so last year and insisted I try Kampong Chicken at Upper Thomson.
Kampong chicken comes from Malaysia. They are free-range chickens that are allowed to roam instead of being caged. Though scrawnier than their farmed counterparts, these chickens are generally considered to have higher nutritional value. (Wiki)

On Saturday night Uncle Jimmy picked us up from the hotel and drove us to 255 Upper Thomson.
Here's what the façade looks like, and I know, what is up with the crab logo on the sign?

Kampong chicken rice

Apparently crab is one of their specialties but they're always sold out.
Between 100-150 chickens are served everyday in this humble chicken rice hole in the wall.

Kampong chicken rice

Joining us for dinner was Mina, 3, granddaughter of my dad's friend. She is half American and half Singaporean.
Here she is patiently waiting for food. Don't you wish your three-year-old could do this?

Mina behaving

At last the chicken rice arrived. This is seriously one of the best I've ever had, and I've tried a lot!
My gauge of really good chicken rice is if the rice can be eaten on its own, simply because it's flavorful.

Kampong chicken rice

This chicken is yellowish. I detected a kind of gelatin in between the skin. My sister found it "umay" but I loved it!

Kampong chicken

There were other dishes, but you know me, I ignore the veggies! Sorry folks.
Here's one of the popular dishes, chicken tails. My mom enjoyed this.

Chicken tails

I highly recommend it, but don't know how to get there except by car/cab. Super worth the trip.

So my sister and I discovered that 2:20 pm is the best time to fly out of Singapore because there are absolutely no queues at the GST counters, check-in, and immigration. The airport is practically deserted.
The whole process was a breeze. I even got to eat last-minute chicken rice at the airport

IMG_4456

IMG_4460

while my sister opted for some (Maricel) laksa.

IMG_4463

Oh and the restroom of the Singapore Airlines lounge is awesome, they even have a shower stall in there, just in case you're stuck due to volcanic ash.
How convenient!

Lovely shower stall

No wonder Changi Airport has just won the Best Airport of 2010.
Singapore Airlines is also consistently on the list of the world's best airlines.
Today I'm on the left side of the plane, window seat, 16A, while my sister is at 16B.

Singapore Airlines

The business class seat reclines 180 degrees! Your feet go under the seat in front of you.

Diday sleeping

It's three hour flight from Singapore to Manila.
Here are my traveling survival essentials:
Y'all know I'm scared of flying. So one hour before the flight I take 1/4 Rivotril (but I think this is no longer enough because I'm still scared at the slightest turbulence, so next time I'll try 1/2).
I begin with five mysteries of the Rosary (salamat Byron).

Thank you Byron!

I'm praying for clear blue skies and no turbulence. Of course no turbulence hardly ever happens, so I'm really praying for safe landing without incident.

Clear blue sky

Fluffy pillows are nice. I borrow one from the empty seat, so I have two. But I wish I had three.

Fluffy pillows

I need a blanket and slippers.

Givenchy blanket

It's a Sunday, so I have to check On the Radar, Philippine Star.

Philippine Star

Earplugs are a must. I found out that 16A is right next to the engine, so the sound bothers scares me.

Earplugs

I have to look at the Duty Free items, even if I don't buy. I just like looking at stuff.

Kris Shop magazine

People magazine is a must when I fly. Good thing my sister brought a copy. This saves me Php 399. Mahalia jackson!

People magazine

I keep my eyes on the flight tracker because I'm really, really duwag on the plane. I cannot wait to land!

IMG_4478

Take note that I don't eat on the plane, don't watch movies and don't need an iPod because I'm too frozen to move, except to go to the toilet multiple times when it's safe to get up.
A trip to Hong Kong may take six visits to the toiled; Singapore, ten visits. I often develop diarrhea on the plane because of fear, so a seat near the restroom is ideal.
I start calming down when the pilot's voice comes on the PA system saying we're about to descend.
I love seeing islands or land from my window. The best part is touchdown, when I'm finally on Philippine soil—never mind that it looks like drought. There's no place like home.

Before we opened the first Pepper Lunch at Rockwell on May 16, 2008, there was already Sizzling Pepper Steak at Trinoma and Star Carrots Pepper Steak at Robinson's Metro East.
In the beginning it was tiresome explaining to people that Pepper Lunch is not connected in any way to Sizzling Pepper Steak. But two years later, it seems like customers can tell the difference.
Tonight, Jay and I saw this sign on Wilson Street and I just had to tell the driver to U-turn and go back.

Funny

I wonder if Sizzling Pepper Steak will sue them—look at that cow logo.
And here's the menu. Look at the prices—not cheap ha.

Their menu

No matter how they try, nothing compares to the original with the patented electromagnetic plate from Japan, heated up to 260 degrees in just one minute. With choice ingredients of steaks imported from Australia and salmon flown in from Norway—you can't go wrong.

Pepper Lunch patented electromagnetic plate

Jeroen is very excited to announce our latest offerings: Seafood Pepper Rice and Seafood Aglio Oglio, with fresh crab meat, scallops and shrimps. Seafood Pepper Rice has the additional ingredient, unagi.

SEAFOOD PROMO

Now here's the good news: Pepper Lunch now delivers to Makati, The Fort, Greenhills, Ortigas, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, Pasig and San Juan. Next month: Parañaque and Alabang.

Going solar

I've been searching for solar-powered lights for our courtyard and roof deck but haven't found any in Manila.
Luckily, Ana and I walked into these at Ikea on Alexandra Road, Singapore.

Ikea solar lamps

The Solig solar-powered floor lamp comes in two colors and is packaged in a compact box. I bought two of these and had no problem packing them in my soft luggage.
Plus it's super easy to assemble. It me five minutes and voila!
Set them up at the courtyard for some afternoon sun.

Ikea solar lamps

Came back at night and turned them on. They give my courtyard a boutique hotel feel.
You can even read a book with it.

Ikea solar lamps

I'm convinced solar is the way to go and I'm going to search for more products.
The Solig lamp costs SGD99 in Singapore or about PHP 3,200, while in the US they cost only US$39.99 or about PHP 1,800! For more details, click here.

I braved the fire sale of Rustan's Shang on its second day. Not so much people, but the smell was so bad I covered my face with tissue and walked as fast as I could.
Not everything was on sale though. I started at the home section to see if the Kartell furniture was on sale—no dice.
I was, however, able to find something cool at Make Room: the Take Charge gadget organizer.
Got two of these, but I think I need more, given the amount of gadgets I own.

IMG_4537

These were are the things I normally take on a trip.

IMG_4543

See how they fit nicely into the kit.

IMG_4539

Et voila!

Take Charge costs more or less PHP 280 at Make Room. Sorry I can't remember the price, but it was cheap!
Make Room is at Alabang Town Center, Bonifacio High Street and the Power Plant Mall at Rockwell.

I purposely avoided entering luxury stores this last trip because you know I have this patient back home.
Every time I'd see a bag I would think, "That's June's treatment."
I visited him yesterday. While I was in Singapore they aspirated 210 ml. of fluid from his stomach.
According to his caregivers, his stomach is smaller and feels softer now. His cheeks have rounded and his thighs are filling up slowly. I think the pneumonia has cleared up, so that's half the battle. Thank you for praying for him!. (EDIT: I just saw Dr. Joseph earlier. Malignancy has not been ruled out, so please pray for June.)

Of course I still have to shop. I discovered the joy of Uniqlo, particularly the lounge wear. We love the price points!
Visited two Uniqlo stores in Singapore—at the basement of Ion Orchard, and at 313 Somerset.
I love Uniqlo's drawstring/elastic pants and softest T-shirts. Uniqlo is one of those brands we need in Manila, as well as Ikea. The day we have those, consider us no longer third world.

Do your kids love lounging on the floor? Mine do, and our house gets packed with kids especially during summer.
Found this cool thing at Ikea called Komisk. Packaged like a bed sheet, it opens up to an extra long throw pillow with three partitions.

Ikea's Komisk

Bought two of these (cause two is my favorite number for shopping). Then back home I bought three extra large (27") throw pillows at SM department store at PHP 199 each.

Pillows from SM

Insert the pillows, and voila—extra higaan, upuan, bahay-bahayan at iba pa.

Ikea's Komisk

As usual I don't remember how much I paid in Singapore, but on the US site it's only US$10.

Remember Barbara, the hairy lady spotted at the MRT, malls, schools and even a concert?

Veet

barbara veet

barbara veet

Last March, Veet challenged you to stalk Barbara with a camera, post them on this site and win cool prizes.
Recently, Veet also challenged Barbara to use their hair removal products for a fabulous makeover.

Veet

They offered Veet hair removal products in wax strips and creams.
Personally I'm a big fan of the wax strips which are available in two sizes—for face and body. Find them at drug stores and supermarkets.

Veet

Wearing a pink debutante dress, Barbara was presented to the press and contest winners at an exclusive pool party at Aquasphere, in Malate, Manila.
Barbara said she was surprised when people started following her online, at malls and other public places.

Veet event

"May catch and shoot order pala ako. My friends kept urging me to finally meet VEET and become a modern woman. I kept telling them nothing is wrong with me. I shave regularly. I just don't know why my hair keeps getting thicker. Sometimes, may nicks and cuts or ingrown hair. It's a painful process," Barbara said at the reveal party.

Veet event

After her encounter with Veet, Barbara can't be happier with her transformation.
"I'm so happy. No more hair! What was I thinking? All the attention on the old Barbara was about the old dresses and the hair. Now the attention is on me, dahil mas maganda na ako. Veet has helped me discover my beauty," she said.

All's well, that ends well.
Don't let unwanted body hair hide your true beauty—discover soft, smooth, and fuzz-free skin with VEET.
