Water, water

When Jeroen and I were 'dating' he was alarmed that I drank nothing but Coke or pineapple juice, so one day he bought me a water cooler, a big standing one and installed it.
You could say Jeroen taught me how to drink water. And though I have a lifelong love-hate relationship with Coke, water has become an important part of my so-called diet.
Cold water is love. When I travel I'm attracted to water in unique packaging.

I love it when hotels give free water, so I don't have to go to the 7-11.

Hotel water

Recently a friend sent me a case of Lightwater, which I thought was imported. It's not your ordinary water because it contains electrolytes, which is also found in Gatorade, minus the coloring and flavoring.
Jeroen, who loves Pellegrino, tried it first and took it to his work out sessions (he tries to train four times a week).
He was raving about it.
"For me it tastes clean and it's the only water that has no after taste hours after you have opened it," he says.

Then I got sick. I am apparently not able to digest popcorn. I was violently ill yesterday, I almost passed out in the toilet. I thought I would be confined to the hospital. I thought I would die!
I started going to the toilet at 1 am and finished at 3 pm. I hardly slept.
Took some medicine and hydrated myself with Lightwater. I rose back from the dead around 5 pm and started to feel hungry. Oh, and I lost one pound!
(Thank you Jeroen, Yaya, Lia for taking care of me. Plus my dad.)

Later that day my son Ben came home sick after playing basketball in the park. He complained of a huge headache. I figured he might be dehydrated. I gave him two kid's Panadol and Lightwater. One hour later, he was playing again.
My kids are the litmus test of taste. They will refuse anything that tastes funny, but with Lightwater there was no complaint.
You could say, hindi lang pang pamilya, pang isports pa!

Lightwater

Lightwater is "water made better"—by getting the purest form of water infused with vital electrolytes.
It is the brainchild of businessman Jasper Ong who's been in the healthy beverages market for the last ten years and counting—importing 100% cranberry, blueberry, acai and pomegranate juices.

Jasper said the idea came to him after he experienced an electrolyte imbalance during a game of badminton.
The following day he began research on electrolyte imbalance and the importance of electrolytes in our system. It took around three years of research and development, plus many trips to Europe before he was able to come up with Lightwater.

He explains: "We basically purify the water back to its original state by removing all the impurities, and then infuse the electrolytes in the form of Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium. We decided not to use Sodium as an electrolyte as there are some studies linking too much sodium intake to high blood pressure."

Packaging design was done in-house with the bottle developed from scratch.
"We didn't want the usual run-of-the-mill bottle commonly found in supermarkets. Our bottles are made from only 100% virgin material which can eventually be recycled into other common household plastic products," Jasper said.

Lightwater's main benefit is it's hydrating properties. It hydrates faster and better than normal water because of its electrolytes. And unlike sport drinks, it doesn't contain sugar, salt, coloring or flavoring.
Lightwater is priced at PHP 25/22 oz. bottle and is initially available at 7-11 stores.

Yesterday I woke up early to bring my yaya's son to the hospital.
My yaya started to work for us during the time of Ondoy to take care of our new baby Christian. She had left her two-year-old boy in Samar under the care of her mom.

Two months ago she asked permission to go home because her son was sick. She borrowed money. When it ran out after a few days she borrowed again, so I asked her to MMS me a photo of her son. I wanted to know if she was telling the truth.

When I received the picture of her son, my heart broke into pieces. We sent money for her to bring her son to Manila for treatment.
When I saw her son for the first time, my heart melted. Even with his distended stomach and skinny limbs, I found him cute, although I had never seen a baby with sunken cheeks.

For the last month I have been sending her son to our pediatrician for checkups and tests. It was discovered that he had many worms and an enlarged liver. With meds and Pediasure, his cheeks started to fill in and he became more lively. But health-wise he was not improving.

The doctor passed him on to a new doctor who wanted him confined to UERM for more tests, but I refused because that was the hospital that went down during Ondoy.
I wanted him at a nearer hospital.
I Googled and found a gastro-pediatrician at Medical City. I woke up early to take them there.
From the new doctor I found out that the baby was suffering from pneumonia more than anything else and was critical. Doctor wanted the baby confined right away at the ICU.
When I found out the ICU was gonna cost PHP 25,000 a day, I was in shock.
Doctor suggested we take him to a government hospital in Pasig.

We went there—I, the yaya, her baby and the yaya's sister. It was the scariest thing. The people were so unfriendly and lifeless. I could not believe the crap poor people go through to be in a hospital.
You know me, I dress like a homeless person in sweats and sneaks. They were so rude. I had the to fight the guards to let the yaya's sister in and not wait in the heat outside. Some security guards really deserve to go to a special place in hell.

Only very few medical workers looked like they cared, but for the most part the people there were uncaring zombies who I know are paid crap—I'd be in a bad mood too.
I had to walk outside on the street to buy IV supplies while the yaya and her baby were in the E.R.
That's when I found out that in government hospitals you have to buy every single supply from the pharmacy on the street, like pay as you go.
I was also surprised that the IV liquid was very affordable—PHP 85 only.
It was the most inconvenient thing. Imagine stepping out for every single hospital supply.

I saw a lot of suffering in the emergency room, a lot of dregs of society moaning in pain.
While waiting for doctors to look at our patient, 15 people suddenly rushed in with a man on a stretcher—about 50 years old with a big stomach and very dirty clothes.
It looked like a stroke or heart attack. From what I gathered he collapsed in the heat.
They ripped off his shirt and let him have that machine you see on TV—the one that shoots doses of electricity into the heart.
I watched them insert a tube down the man's throat and pump his lungs with air and chest manually.
To me he looked already dead.

I had to leave to do the paperwork for our patient. When I got back the man was already wrapped in a green bed sheet. Gone just like that with no family, only co-workers who took him there.
After they wrapped his body some of the nursing students were laughing around him, like nothing happened.

I finally got a room for the baby. Php 700 a day is more affordable. I figure he could be there for weeks or months and I am prepared. I found out that his cousin had died earlier at the same age in Samar from the same symptoms. I don't want this baby to die.

After four hours my work was done and I had to catch a meeting at Shang. I left the girls with money and today I heard that the baby's doing better with the IV and meds on.
I can only pray that God does His magic on this kid and lets him get well. He is my yaya's only child and I cannot bear for her to lose him.

This is June. He is two years old. If you are a mom, please say a special prayer for him today to get well and hopefully soon.
Happy mother's day to all the moms out there.

June

So much chicken!

Three days from now I'll be back in Singapore with my parents and sisters and I'll be glad to get out of politics and heat for a while. I do hope to catch up on work while I'm there.

Singapore is like our second home. I like its moderate pace—not too slow and not too fast. It's not like Hong Kong where you burn yourself out shopping because stores are still open until midnight.
It's not overwhelming like Tokyo where you never have time to see everything because there's so much to see.
It's not too hot like Bangkok. Traffic isn't bad and everything is reachable by cab. In Singapore I never have to go down the tube!

What I like about Singapore can be summarized like this:
City-wise, it looks like a perfect version of Manila.
Airport is so near.
I have no fear of going to the toilet because Singaporeans understand renovation and modern toilets.
Plus, there's always something good to eat!

Here's where danger lies. I notice how my stomach always pops out majorly when I'm in Singapore and it's because I cannot resist chicken rice.
First chance I got (I had a one hour break from work) I slipped into the Mandarin Orchard's (formerly Meritus Mandarin) newly renovated Chatterbox.

The newly renovated Chatterbox

In no time Chatterbox's famous chicken rice was right in front of me, with a glass of chilled fresh orange juice.

Here's a bird's eye view

IMG_3110

(Tell you the truth, it didn't taste as good as the first time I tried it years ago. I think Chef Stevie's homemade chicken rice in Manila is better. I actually ordered some for tomorrow's dinner. I would like to blog it but Chef Stevie's chicken rice doesn't photograph well. It does, however, taste authentically good.)

The following day I had lunch by myself at the new Orchard Central mall. With so many new eating places, I chose to eat in a safe one because I was near starvation.
I ordered pork and oyster katsu but I didn't enjoy it as much as the Hong Kong branch we usually go to at World Trade Center.

IMG_3462

Next day I dragged Jeroen to Din Tai Fung at the basement of the Paragon. It was Jeroen's first time and my third. Since I knew what to expect, I'm glad we didn't over order because people tend to do that at DTF.

On our last night my uncle sent a van to take us to Powsing at Serangoon Garden Way, my special request for my birthday.

IMG_3601

Six of us shared a ton of food including their famous chicken rice and fried chicken wings marinated in shrimp paste. (Not in picture: vegetable dishes)
I felt like crying because sometimes in Manila I really think of chicken rice and there I was having authentic chicken rice on my birthday and in Singapore!

IMG_3595

IMG_3598

Fried chicken wings with shrimp paste is really the bomb, promise!

IMG_3599

On our last day, I made sure to try 4 Fingers Bonchon crispy chicken on Basement 4 of the new Ion Orchard mall because our cousins have been raving about it. They have been trying to bring this chicken to Manila but the franchise prices are unreal! So might as well enjoy the chicken in Singapore if you're there.

IMG_3686

Here's the cool packaging. Unfortunately there is no place to sit in the vicinity. Standing room only.

IMG_3689

My expectations were so high, but in the end this tasted better than any chicken rice I had this trip.
It doesn't photograph well, but trust me it's delish.

Meralco update

So I've heard a lot of people saw a drop in their Meralco bills.
Even though this month is no cooler than last month (in fact I feel God's anger when I go outside), our Meralco bill went down by a good amount.

What I did:
Gave up the fax machine, wine cooler, and Airport Express in the living room. Unplugged appliances when not in use. Bought an Asahi air cooler to "assist" our aircon in bringing down the temperature in the bedroom. Changed many lightbulbs into Landlite LEDs. Packed up the inflatable pool, because water pumps cost a lot of energy.
The bill went down by PHP 7,762 while consumption went down by 240 kilo watt hours.

meralco copy

Air coolers can be bought at appliance and hardware stores. Ours cost about PHP 6,000. These things do not work when there is no cool air to circulate, so they are basically aircon assistants.
LED bulbs cost around PHP 500 each and can be bought at hardware stores or the Landlite showroom at the Fort.

Landlite LED E27Landlite LED E14

Yesterday I bought Power Savers at ACE Hardware in Megamall. These cost PHP 1500 per unit and you'll need one unit per PHP 3,500/electric bill.
I bought a few of them so I'll let you know what happens. If you want to see how these work, go to Ace Hardware and watch the demo.
After that, inverter aircons and solar power are next. I'll be updating you in my quest for an affordable Meralco bill.

Whoever started Kris Aquino's despedida party is a genius.
Started only yesterday, the Facebook group has gained more than 2,700 followers.
Hey, with this growing following, we might have to book the Megatent!

Let me refresh your memory.

I'm super OK na with Noy. After getting over the shock of the results (which proved the surveys true), I'm so happy we have progressed as a nation through the automated elections. Who would ever thought we would have results on the same day and reporters would be signing off from election coverage the day after?
I'm glad there's no time for massive cheating and dagdag-bawas. So can you please already proclaim Lani Cayetano as mayor of Taguig?
I feel very positive now about change. Will no longer make fun of Homer though I want merchandise!
I will however post my wish list for him.
More later as I have to board a plane. XO!

SINGAPORE—I'm back in my second home, sort of. Only because Singapore feels like a perfect version of Manila. No billboards, no trash, no traffic, lots of greens, not too hot, plus it drizzles rain nearly every day.
What truly amazes me here is the abundance of decent toilets all around, so you never have a fear of answering the call of nature. And not just decent mind you, but nice toilets.
These people really understand the importance of feeling clean while doing numbers 1, 2, or 3 outside the comforts of your home.
Whether you're in a mall or hotel, you'll be amazed at what efforts they go through to achieve the most comfortable/amazing restroom experience you'll ever have.

That said, I wish Filipinos would realize the importance of clean and modern toilets in public places like malls, restaurants, office buildings, most especially hospitals, schools and airports.
To me restrooms or bathrooms can make or break the memory of a place. A gross memory sticks to me more than just a normal experience.
Take a look at our toilets without the toilet paper, the cheapest toilet fixtures, the smell of stale odors.
We have to fix the airport and the schools. The poor children who get sick trying to avoid going to the bathroom.
Really, we have to think of toilets as business owners and as a nation.
Right now I'm getting sleepy. Will explore more tomorrow.

Dear Kind Reader,
You may have been watching my statcounter on the lower right side of this page, waiting for me to announce the 8 millionth promo.
I have already gathered prizes from HP, the A.Shop, Youji & Me, Penguin, Kamiseta, Moleskine, National Bookstore, Kira Plastinina, Tech Totes, Informatics and more.
However, because of the recent elections, some medical issues I had to attend to, plus the fact I had to leave suddenly for Singapore twice in a month, I wasn't able to collect all the prizes from the sponsors.
So I'm moving the promo from 8,000,000 to 8,888,888 which should happen in a couple of months.
I'm very sorry about this but I promise you bigger prizes than ever and will be writing about the sponsors as the date approaches.
Thank you for understanding.
xoxo

If you would like to sponsor a prize for the next promo, please get in touch with me at chuvaness@livejournal.com.
