Yesterday was Veet day.
A small group of media was invited to get to know Brazilian-Japanese model/actor Daniel Matsunaga, who is the star of Veet's new ad campaign.
Over lunch at Azuthai, we asked Daniel what happened after this elevator viral came out on YouTube.
On the first day, Daniel said he stayed home while his phone rang incessantly from calls and texts by concerned friends.
Daniel, after all, is supposed to be exclusively dating actress Heart Evangelista.
Although his family as well as Heart's were in on the ad campaign, Daniel was under a non-disclosure agreement with Veet.
So for the next three days he couldn't step out of the house.
The truth is, Heart has nothing to worry about.
"I would never do that to her," Daniel says. And when he says it, you believe it.
After a few days, it was revealed that Daniel was endorsing an awareness campaign for the most convenient hair-removal brand in the market.
Daniel Matsunaga has been based in the Philippines for the last two years.
Previously based in Thailand as a model, he was supposed to visit only for two months.
But work came along, he ended up extending and extending, until show business called and Heart Evangelista came into his life.
"Do you consider Manila your second home now?" I asked Daniel.
"No, it is my first home," he smiled.
And no, the romance isn't a publicity stunt. You can really tell he is in love with Heart whom he calls "angelita", "baby", or "chuchut"—LOL.
He's been craving some Brazilian food as there is no authentic Brazilian restaurant in the Philippines (and I concur).
He does love Filipino adobo and kaldereta.
Asked if he likes Barrio Fiesta (owned by Heart's family), Daniel says, "I love Barrio Fiesta."
In Veet's latest promo, contestants are invited to submit original photos or videos showing how they use Veet products.
Prizes include Apple gadgets like the iPod touch, iPod nano and iPod shuffles, Veet gift packs, plus the grand prize—an iPad and a date with Daniel Matsunaga.
I was curious to know what would happen on the date as Daniel is currently in a relationship.
There will be a meal, media/chaperones to cover the event, and a ceremonial waxing using Veet.
"But will the wax be Brazilian?" I had to ask. (I can hear the Veet people snickering.)
"Ah, no," Daniel laughs.
"How bout a Filipino wax?" I ask.
Daniel: What's that?
Me: Moustache.
Daniel: LOL
Me: What if a guy joins the contest?
Daniel: That's okay, I have nothing against gays.
Me: What if the girl wins the date and the gay wins the iPad, is that fair?
Daniel: That's okay.
Me: What if the second prize is a date with Romnick Sarmienta?
Daniel: Who's that?
(People are choking on their shrimp cakes, while listening to our conversation.)
Me: Romnick Sarmienta is a Filipino actor who looks just like you, but you're the taller version.
Daniel: Really?
(Daniel's handler reminds him that Sheryl Cruz, who co-stars with him in the Filipino fantasy series, Grazilda, once dated Romick Sarmienta.)
Daniel: Oh, yes, yes, now I remember. She told me I look like him.
Me: So maybe Sheryl has a crush on you?
Daniel: LOL
