The older I get, the more frequent my migraines.
Migraines have been such a part of my recent life that I got used to it. If you are close to me you have probably seen me wearing a cool gel patch on my head. (Cool gel pads and Biogesic are always in my bag.)
A few days ago I got sick after eating my favorite strawberry eclair from PAUL. It started with a slight headache, which escalated to a migraine after snacking on Coke and Chippy. (sorry)
I ended up with stomach cramps and nausea. I decided to do something about it.
My friend Mel Ongsue had convinced me to take a food intolerance test at home. Basically a med tech will go to your house and take some blood. Ten days later you will receive an email or hard copy result that looks like this:
Those highlighted in red are not good for me!
Never mind the fig, squash, caseign, beans—I can live without those.
But what does eliminating the following mean for me?
Milk— say no to ice cream, milk shakes, fresh milk, leche flan, butter, cheese
Cola nut— no more COKE???
Wheat— no to bread, Kikkoman, pasta, flour, pizza
Egg whites— no more cake, cookies, fried eggs
Corn– no to corn flakes, Chippy, pop corn
So basically my snacking life is over.
Last Wednesday I started my new diet. It has been kind of tricky choosing what to eat. Instead of Coke, I had orange juice. Instead of chocolate, I had dried mango.
And guess what? I didn’t get a migraine! It was very strange because migraine usually creeps up on me after merienda. And while waiting for my migraine to set it, it didn’t.
Today is my third day of this diet plan, and as I write this I am dying to reach out for a Coke and Chippy. I am asking the cook to make banana cue instead.
To be honest with you, I’m not sure how long I can do this. I know I’m going to reach out for a Coke one of these days, but for now I am willing to try and see I can stick to it and lose weight in the process.
Not too long ago I asked God to help me stop drinking Coke, and here is my answer.
Be careful what you pray for.
P.S. The test is quite expensive at Php 15,000. But if you are suffering from headaches, bad skin, or depression, or bad stomach and you can’t stand it anymore, it might be worth investing in a food intolerance test.
