Last week, I was invited to Taylor Lautner’s press conference for BENCH at the Makati Shnagri-La ballroom.
I consider myself very careful about my belongings and placed my bag behind my seat.
But during all the excitement, I didn’t notice that my bag had fallen to the carpet with my wallet right next to it.
Good thing all the guests and staff were decent and none of my things disappeared.

But when my friend Jude had his bag stolen from a chair he was sitting next to at a Quezon City restaurant, I felt bad for him as though I was the one who lost a Margiela bag, a cellphone, and Mommy’s wallet with Php 15,000 inside.
Why was he carrying that much cash?
Jude was supposed to pay his bills. But the good friend and kaladkarin in him made him accompany our journalist friend to visit their schoolmate’s new restaurant instead.

How do bags disappear from right under your nose, or on the seat next to you, even though you feel protected by a wall?
Check out these two CCTV videos taken at McDonalds’ restaurants in Quezon City and Dau.
In this first video, the victims are on the left, while the thieves are on the right, aided by a man on a cellphone, who drops two bills (pesos and a dollar) and asks the people on the left if it is theirs.
When the couple checks out the bills, the thieves on the right snatch the bag right from the hole in the wall dividing them.

Be very aware of modus operandi where snatchers drop a bunch of coins to divert everyone’s attention, allowing accomplices to grab the bags of victims. This diversion method is also known as salisi.
In this next video, the victim is on the left with her bag placed on a seat next to her.
The thief takes the seat behind the bag, while a man with cellphone covers the scene of the crime.
Watch as the bag gets snatched, while the salisi gang disappears quickly.

So please be careful with your bags. Be careful even when seated in a booth or next to the wall. Make sure your bags are always in front of you. Hold on to a strap, even if it’s in your grocery cart. Be extra vigilant when there is a commotion around you.

It must’ve been Sunday afternoon when I noticed the rain pouring heavily outside.
“Is there a storm coming?” I tweeted.
Tropical storm #MaringPH is coming, was the tweet I got back.

So the kids have been home since Monday, Tuesday and today. I feel a little guilty for enjoying the cool/bed/sinigang/sweater weather while other have lost homes and loved ones.
Felt guilty checking out the new Muji store at Shangri-La yesterday. But the rest of the time, I stayed home.

It was an added treat for me since work was called off and my husband also stayed home.
Today we decided to make some homemade spaghetti, since Del Monte sent some merienda packs. The merienda pack on the left costs more or less Php 40 in the supermarket. I bought a small packet of Del Monte tomato paste to add more zing.

My husband is a Dutch trained chef and makes wonderful things in our kitchen.
I prepared the ingredients and took the pictures, while Jeroen did most 98% of the cooking.

What you’ll need:

1 pack of Del Monte spaghetti merienda pack (about Php 40)
2 teaspoons of Del Monte tomato paste
350 grams of ground beef
2 tablespoons of cooking oil
vienna sausage or hotdog, sliced
1 small garlic, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
a dash of oregano, pepper, and salt

Here’s how we do it at home:
1) Bring some water to a boil before throwing in a pack of Del Monte spaghetti noodles.

2) Cover and boil for 8 minutes while preparing the sauce.

3) When it’s done, drain noodles and top with a slice of butter to prevent them from sticking together.

4) If your kids like hotdog or sausage in their spaghetti, brown some slices in a teflon pan and set aside.

5) Using the same oil, throw in 350 grams of ground beef with chopped garlic and onions.

6) Add two teaspoons of Del Monte tomato paste, oregano, and pepper.

7) When cooked, pour the entire pack of Del Monte tomato sauce into the pot, mix, and simmer.

8) Throw in the sausage or hotdog, add salt to taste, and voila!

Optional: Add Farmer Sanchez.
Cooked with love, this is restaurant-grade spaghetti bolognese, if you ask me!
Perfect bonding food for the kids.

I’ve just started Season 5 of Grey’s Anatomy. I started late and I don’t mind, because now I can have my Grey’s Anatomy marathons at night while everybody’s sleeping.
In the beginning I thought I would rekindle my crush on Patrick Dempsey since he was one of my crushes in the ’80s.

But honestly, I find his character, Dr. Derek Shepherd so boring. I find his choices of women so boring, and I can’t date a guy who lives in a vehicle.

I prefer Dr. Alex Karev (played by Justin Chambers), even though he’s an asshole. At least he’s not boring.

Plus points for having been a Calvin Klein model and looking like a young Marlon Brando.

I kind of liked Dr. George O’Malley because kindness is a big turn-on for me. But I couldn’t crush on him fully when I found out actor T.R. Knight is gay.
As a fag hag, I love gay men as friends, but I can’t fall in love with them because it’s useless. I have trained my heart that way.

As for Dr. Mark Sloan, no thanks. I don’t find him cute. I don’t find him steamy. I just don’t like.

Thin pizza lovers have more to look forward to as Greenwich introduces Pizza Thins in four different flavors:
Signature Special, Hawaiian, Pepperoni and All Meat.
We got to try all four in an impromptu pizza buffet at home.

To enjoy them, my husband Jeroen heated up some of the slices, while the kids didn’t mind grabbing them out of the box.
Verdict: The kids and I prefer simple pizza, so we liked Pepperoni best. So cheesy, no wonder kids like it.

Jeroen likes many toppings. His favorites were Signature Special and All-Meat.

He notes “the right thickness of the crust. I like its crunch when you bite. You can even eat the whole pizza, unlike other thin-crust pizzas where the ends become like cardboard. This one is perfect, with the right amount of toppings that go all the way to the edge of the pizza—another reason to finish every slice.”

Our least favorite was Hawaiian, simply because I don’t like pineapple with anything but a dish of rock salt.

I’m so thrilled to receive makeup from Antonio Lopez x MAC Cosmetics!
Antonio Lopez was one of our idols during my UP College of Fine Arts years in the mid-’80s.
His style was something I could relate to, and my friends and I tried to copy his illustrations.

During his heyday his work captured the fascination of Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent, and launched the
careers of model icons Jerry Hall, Marisa Berenson, Pat Cleveland and more.
Born in 1943 in Utuado, Puerto Rico, Antonio Lopez moved with his family to New York’s Spanish Harlem at the age of seven.
In the late 1950s he attended the Fashion Institute of Technology, where he met his lifelong lover and professional partner, Juan Ramos.
After leaving FIT, he moved on to work for Women’s Wear Daily, where he became the publication’s most famous illustrator. Soon he was offered a position at The New York Times, and later freelanced for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle and Andy Warhol’s Interview.
His career soared from the ’60s to the ’80s, then in 1984 he was diagnosed with HIV.
He traveled around the world looking for experimental cures, then on March 17, 1987, he died at the young age of 44.

“I want to travel for a living!” says my friend’s bio on Instagram.
My friend, Ginggay Joven de la Merced, started working as a teenager in her mom’s PR firm, Visions and Expressions.
We met in the late ’90s when she was working as a Philippine Star columnist.
Now in her 30s, Ginggay functions as a part-time consultant, full-time house manager, mom of two kids, and wife to Noel.

Ginggay is one of those people I know who has itchy feet, always thinking of where to travel next.
And she doesn’t just go around Asia for shopping or hoarding objects. The Ginggay I know doesn’t even like shopping. She prefers collecting memories and images.

Ginggay is also one of the first people I know who ever got into Instagram and became obsessed with it.

Last night some of us were lucky enough to be invited to YStyle’s 10th anniversary at SMX Aura.
Can you imagine, ten years?? Congrats to Bea Ledesma, Celine Lopez and their team.
Can I just say Bea Ledesma is a genius? The venue was genius. The seating arrangement was genius.
So many people were there and we didn’t see all of them!
Everyone came home with a giant swag bag/laundry bag/eco bag designed by Everywhere We Shoot x Bleach Catastrophe.

So today I was staring at the bag and wondering how to carry this around and figured out a way to do it.

She’s the daughter of Janet Lim Napoles, currently the most hated woman in the Philippines.
While mom Janet is in police custody for (probably) having stolen billions from the Filipino people, Jeane is somewhere in Los Angeles doing God knows what.

While waiting for Season 3 of Scandal on October 3, 2013, I can’t help but think: with all of Janet Lim Napoles’ billions, she could actually hire Olivia Pope to get her out of this mess.
But since Olivia Pope is only fictional, she hired Lorna Kapunan instead.

Which leads me to ask:

1) Did she really pay 20 million for Kapunan to take her case?

2) Who are the gladiators behind Kapunan?

Who are the Huck, Quinn, Abby and Harrison of the firm?

3) Is there a special “friendship” between Kapunan and the President? (just kidding)

4) What are the secrets and coverups Malacañan is hiding from us?

5) What advice would Olivia Pope give Napoles?

6) Since Olivia Pope was based on real-life crisis manager Judy Smith, why not hire Smith instead?

7) Will there be further arrests?

8) And God forbid: will a whistle blower die?

Can’t wait to see how everything unfolds. I am really hoping some people will go to jail and to a hospital.
Meanwhile, we await the continuation of Scandal, Season 3.
