Meet Chinie Diaz

Staying in for Holy Week?
It’s been a while since I’ve recommended another blog. I just recently found one that I thought was worth sharing—one you might want to go through over the long weekend.
I stumbled upon Chinie Hidalgo Diaz’s blog by accident and ended up clicking the “Random” button again and again—it’s a Tumblr feature that brings you to random entries on someone’s blog.
Her cartoons remind me of my sister Ana who sometimes draws the day’s events in her blog.

ana

I love how Chinie deals with haters on her blog.
Here’s a sample entry:

Haters Gonna Hate. Bashers Gonna Bash. That’s Fab.

So I got another reader request yesterday. Well okay, it wasn’t exactly a request. It was more like hate mail, with a question.

I’ve been getting quite a bit of that ever since I wrote this controversial post — which I really had no idea was going to be so controversial. But oh well, live and learn. So yes, I get quite a bit of this now:

Lovely. Just lovely.

So anyway I’m never quite sure how to respond — or if I even should — but I realized that my answer to the most recent one actually made me happy! So let’s do this!  Here’s what the reader asked:

Lovely. Just lovely.
And since the issue seemed to hinge on my drawing, I decided to answer IN DRAWINGS. :)
So here goes…
Answer #1:

Answer #2:

Answer #3:

See, here’s the thing, dear. I don’t draw or write because I think I’m particularly good at it.
I do it because it makes me happy.
If it makes other people smile, that makes me even happier. If it makes others angry for some reason, that doesn’t really detract from my own joy in what I do. And being able to do what gives you joy… well, that’s FAB. At 40+ or any age.
But I do thank you for your feedback, because as SuperBianca said in the Social Good Summit…

Have a happy day, everyone! Go forth and be FAB. :)

(END OF ENTRY)

I wish I had her attitude towards haters. I became an instant fan.
After reading many of her entries, I wanted to know more and found her on Twitter.
Chinie, a former teacher, now works as a copywriter and creative director of a direct marketing company. She also contributes to Rappler every other Monday.
She started drawing only last year!
“I honestly had no idea I could even draw until I started playing Draw Something,” she shared.
“I don’t normally include a lot of detail, so each drawing usually takes just a few minutes. In general a blog post will take me about an hour or hour and a half, but more of that is spent on thinking and writing than drawing. I’m not really one of those people who plan their blog posts in advance. Most days when I wake up I have absolutely no idea what I’m going to blog about.”

chinie

But why is her cartoon self always in a duster? I really wanna know. Is it a duster?
“Hahaha! I’d like to say that the real reason is that it’s the easiest to draw, but the truth is I really dress like that most days. Duster at home and a comfy, baggy.. este.. flowy dress when out. But hey, my dusters and dresses are cute ha! I just can’t be bothered to draw different dress details each day,” she said.

So here’s the link to her blog. Enjoy the holidays! Happy long weekend!

My mom said something funny after buying a pair of Margiela flats last Sunday.
“Type ko to. Gusto kong mag-groovy for a change,” she told my dad.

Margiela flats

Groovy. I haven’t heard that word in years.
“The last time I heard that was in Scooby Doo,” pointed out my sister Ana, 21.

Scooby Doo

I remember the first time I heard the word “type” to mean “like.”
It was the ’70s. My parents and I were watching Miss Philippines on our black and white TV, and my dad points out a contestant and says, “Ayan. Type ko yan.”
I was confused. The image I had in my head was a typewriter.

I bought a typewriter

I had a recent conversation with my sons about the word “epic,” which I hate.
“Epic” to them means “great” or “awesome.” While to me it means “long narrative poem with a hero. You know, like Iliad, Odyssey, Homer?” I told my kids.

049658

Unfortunately, this was the Homer my son had in mind.

Homer

So what are the words our parents still say that sound funny to us?
I made a survey on Twitter and found out my folks are just as funny as your folks.

SM Shoemart. My son asked me why some people call SM Shoemart. I told him SM stands for Shoemart because the owner of Shoemart, who happens to be the richest man in the Philippines, Mr. Henry Sy, didn’t have shoes while growing up. So he worked hard until he opened a shoe store, which became a department store, which became a mall and so on. And the name SM Shoemart stuck, as in we’ve got it all for you.

Copon bond or coupon bond.
Some folks actually call it kokomban, in reference to bond paper.

bond paper

According to Investopedia, a coupon bond is “a debt obligation with coupons attached that represent semiannual interest payments. Also known as a bearer bond.”

Coupon bond

That said, I still don’t know why people call it coupon bond.

Kendle. This kind.

Candle

Scissor Salad. Back in the ’70s, it was a popular dish in my grandmother’s house.

Caesar Salad

Chit. Not the play money you use to pay in the school canteen or fair. “Chit” is another word for “check” or “bill.”

cheque please

Jingle. Not referring to Christmas bells, but referring to a call of nature, as in “Teka muna. Jumi-jingle pa siya.”

Manneken Pis

Picha pie. You know, like Shakey’s.

AC/DC for bisexual. Another funny term for bisexual: silahis.

Karioka

Mens, meaning monthly period. Or Kotex, for sanitary pads.

Pogi, for handsome—but hey, I still say that

Happy Easter!
I know it’s a strange greeting. I find it weird whenever people say that, but I just heard the Pope say it on TV, so it must be a legit greeting.
Speaking of Easter, my husband found this cute video on how to make a scrambled egg inside its shell. He finds the weirdest things online. Enjoy!

The Last days of Pope John Paul II

Tomorrow, April 2nd, marks the 8th death anniversary of Pope John Paul II.
I wrote such a brief entry about the event, even though it affected me profoundly during that time.
Last night I stayed up late watching this CNN documentary on the weeks leading to his death in 2005.
Finally it made me understand why the Pope chose to stay in position while physically suffering and deteriorating before our very eyes.
The documentary reminded me how blessed I am to have known him as Pope for 26 years, and helped me appreciate the subsequent election of Pope Benedict XV.

Run from the heat with David Beckham’s shoes

I used to run as a child and seriously thought I was good. But then a sharp pain would shoot up on my lower right side every time I ran.
My elder brother Manolo had appendicitis when we were kids, so I became paranoid whenever I ran and had that pain.
Now that I’m older, I found out I could no longer run. I mean I can run for only a minute and go back to walking.
Meanwhile, my other brother Dennis lost so much weight running, and I have all kinds of excuses not to work out, such as the traffic, the time, the hot weather.
If heat and running matter to you, here’s a running shoe which provides ventilation from all sides for improved running performance, endorsed by David Beckham, no less.

David Beckham Adidas
David Beckham Adidas

New ventilation channels across the outsole and the use of climacool® material on the upper of the shoe help sweat to evaporate.
In addition, the COOLEVER lining, a special clover-shaped yarn, keeps the foot cool, dry and comfortable during the run. The achieved performance benefit of 360° ventilation reduces thermal stress and discomfort during workouts and results in increased running performance.

Adidas climacool

The benefit of 360° ventilation is highlighted in the new climacool® launch film, directed by Nathan Price and developed by 180LA. While the rest of the city tries to get any bit of breeze with the help of hand-held fans and airconditioners, David Beckham enjoys a cool and ventilated run in his climacool® Revolution.

The new climacool® Revolution running shoe is available in adidas Sport Performance stores and other sports retailers nationwide with a recommended retail price of PHP 6,895.

Mindanao gets ready for Summer Peace Festival 2013

With war, violence and corruption dominating coverage about Mindanao in the mainstream media, it’s no wonder the island seems off-limits to the average Filipino.
For decades, repeated appeals and numerous efforts to bring peace to the region have yielded little results.
In an effort to change the perception of the region and foster peace in the region, a group of young individuals with roots in Mindanao spearheads a week-long collaborative festival in Northern and Western Mindanao.
Watch this:

This April 26 to May 1, 2013, Good Karma Productions, Muni Productions and Ministry of Mushrooms, Inc. invite you to two events, collectively dubbed the Summer Peace Festival 2013.
The organizers seek to spread peace by promoting Mindanao’s art, culture, eco-tourism, food and music—thereby supporting the region’s artists and musicians.
The first leg, Luna Musika Lawaig will be on April 26-28, 2013 in Cagayan de Oro, while the second Leg, Paz Musica del Mar will be on April 29 to May 1, 2013 in Zamboanga City.
Participating are numerous international and local musicians, artists and artisans, chefs and educators; while tons of outdoor activities and seminars await guests.

Experience the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde’s first ever contemporary multisensory exhibit in The Multimedia Arts Festival.
The exhibit will feature art works and installations by of the Multimedia Arts Program.

ana's poster

There will be nine different concepts on display:
Rewind will take you back to 90′s to reminisce or show the younger generation what life was like in that decade.
Twisted Tales will reinterpret childhood fairy tales, creating new librettos while still retaining the stories’ classic crux.
IM | POSSIBLE will attempt to answer strange ideas in the form of innocent questions or philosophical ones.
Spectrum will represents a multitude of ideas using different mediums.
Artbeat will weave together the past and the present through a creative play between the 80′s and today.
Cosmic Leap will recreates a virtual reality through different dimensions by providing visual, somatosensory and auditory perception.
Espejismo is the Spanish word for “mirage” and will beg the questions: “Is it really there? Is it present? Does it exist in reality or is it just an illusion, a trick of the visual perception?”
Inspired by Newton’s experiments with prisms, the nature of light, and spectrums, Prism will take the students’ collective understanding of the arts and their individual creativity to bring you this exhibit, taking a single concept and refracting it into an exhibit that is just as varied as a single beam of light.
And Bring to Light will create a futuristic visual for the viewers to experience the light that makes use of what new technology can bring us, showing what the future has in store.

The Multimedia Arts Festival will be at the Rockwell Tent from April 10-12, 2013.
April 10 will mark the opening night starting from 6PM onwards and will be open on April 11 and 12 from 11 AM onwards.

Behind the Building: Privato Tower

$
0
0

With all the construction going on in the city, one can’t help but wonder just how safe or how well-planned these buildings are.
Among the structures up for completion this 2013 is the condotel Privato Tower right along Pasig City’s Shaw Boulevard.
Here, developer Green Asia Real Estate gives us a sneak a peek on how a high-rise is constructed and what really goes on behind the building.
First off, an official groundbreaking to mark the start of construction. In Privato’s case, it was exactly 14 months and 21 days ago.

1

The excavation is a tricky part—you get to see how “tough” your foundation is. A happy problem that Privato encountered was a solid, hard bedrock that further enhances the structure’s integrity. It was pure adobe that took months just to dig through.

2

Getting into the interiors, design planning is always one of the most exciting parts. Here, they made sure every corner was equal in form and function.

3

In planning a bedroom, take into consideration every movement the resident makes. This includes not having to crouch down just to charge a cellphone, bedside reading at night, and a whole lot more. These are concerns that room planning should revolve around.

4

An actual model unit should honestly reflect the way a room will look upon turnover. This way, no unpleasant surprises for investors

5

Privato is proud to work with the best furniture makers in the Philippines. No wonder Filipino craftsmanship is celebrated around the globe.

6

Onsite, engineers swim through tons of blueprints and endless coordination with architects and designers. Casas+Architects leads the Privato team with Jose Aliling as construction manager and Architect Juan Carlo Calma as interior designer. Enderun Hospitality is the hotel’s professional management team.

7

One of Privato’s many green features is the use of Silicon Resin or SIREX paint—a low Volatile Organic Compound material that self-washes during the rain. This way, no need to repaint the structure for the next 15 years instead of the usual three to five years.

8

Last December 12, 2012 or just 11 months from its groundbreaking ceremony, Privato officially topped off. Now they are busy closing the walls and focusing on the interior works.

10

Located across from Ynares Sports Center and Kapitolyo rotunda, Privato is slated for turnover this 3rd quarter of 2013.

Gyu-kaku is not ready for consumption

$

In 2010, during a trip to Japan, Jeroen and I thought about bringing a grilling concept to Manila.
Our friend Joey Lorenzo told us to check out Gyu-Kaku, a popular grilling chain in the country.
We found one in Shibuya. It was a very casual kind of hole in the wall.

Gyu-Kaku Japan
IMG_0372

We liked the vibe and found it charming. The food, not bad.
After a few emails, we found out we had to go through Singapore to get a franchise. We flew to Singapore to meet the owner and found out that casual vibe we enjoyed in Tokyo was nowhere to be found.
It looked kind of posh, which was not what we wanted.

Gyu-Kaku
Dividers at Gyu-Kaku
Gyu-Kaku

So the idea was scrapped. Then last week at while dining at the Fort, I saw that Gyu-Kaku had opened right next to IHOP.
I thought it would be expensive, so I asked my dad to take us to Sunday lunch.
Luckily I found someone on Twitter who knew the manager. I was able to reserve a table for 8 people at 12 noon.

On Sunday, while getting my hair blown out at home, I started getting calls from a 0915 number that I didn’t recognize.
Signal was bad, so I had a few dropped calls. I wondered what the emergency was.
Then we got connected. Gerda from Gyu-Kaku was confirming if were coming for lunch. I checked the time, it was 11:30 PM.
“Yes we are coming,” I said.
“What time?” she wanted to know.
“Diba 12 o’clock our reservation?”
“Ah OK.”
So I kept calm and carried on.
By 11:45 we were already in the car. I got another call from Gerda confirming if we were going to be there.
I told her we were in the car and on the way.
“But it’s already 12 o-clock!” she said.
I became nervous and checked the time. “No it’s not! It’s 11:45!”
I felt like I was being pressured to fly over there or lose the table.
I felt my blood pressure shoot up. “What’s your name?”
“Gerda.”
“Would you please stop calling me or I will tell the owners what you’re doing.”
She hung up. Hence, the blog entry.

We got there at exactly 12 o’clock. I thought there would be a long queue, but the only queue was for IHOP.
I found Gerda on the phone talking to someone on the phone, which she would not put down when I tried to talk to her. Was she harassing other guests?
I found the Singaporean trainer next to her and told her that Gerda had called me five times since 11:30 and it was annoying.
Gerda never said a word or apologized. She just stood there smiling.

My parents arrived shortly. We tried to order but found out that so many things were not available, like scallops, bacon and certain kinds of beef.
At 12:30 noon, no sign of salad, drinks or even edamame.
Not even beef, which my brother pointed out, is served raw.
To think Gerda was bugging us to be there at 11:30, there we were starving at 12:30. Never mind the adults, I was worried about my kids.
12:45 came. We finally had some food to share—us five adults. We felt so hungry. Where was the rest of our order?

Untitled

We couldn’t even cook the beef because the coals took so long to arrive. There were no dipping sauces, no rice, no drinks.
The food came in trickles. Here’s my dad’s onigiri that we grilled

Untitled

The shrimp was good and came in a foil, steamed in garlic butter

Untitled

Untitled

The wagyu beef was OK, but expensive (Php 1500++). I liked it, but my dad found it fatty. I found it tiny. Definitely not for sharing.

Untitled

The other beef order was so tough, it took 48 hours to chew. My dad gave up.
Here’s what we all liked—the grilled Japanese sausage.

Untitled

I wish I could come back for it, but the service was so bad, my dad called it “the worst meal in my life.” LOL.
Our total bill for 8 people was Php 7,000++. Not bad.
But it was pure chaos. Everybody lacked training. The Singapore trainer shouldn’t leave. Where are the owners?
Twice, the manager and staff would came to our table to say, “Is everything OK?”
And I can’t lie. I said, “We’re coping.”
Not saying you shouldn’t go there. Just don’t go now.
