Tonkatsu story

Tonkatsu or Japanese pork cutlet is something I like to eat but don’t get to eat often except when abroad, because what we have here in Manila is usually close to a breaded porkchop.
In Singapore, I used to eat this with Ana, at the basement of Takashiyama

Romankan Yokohama

romankan yokohama

Until something better came along: Tonkichi can be found in many places in Singapore and Hong Kong.
My favorite combo is pork rosu and oysters

Tonkichi

Don’t forget a side of soft-shell crab

Soft-shell crab, Tonkichi

As far as the real thing goes, there’s Maisen, practically an institution in Omotesando

Maisen

It’s not my favorite tonkatsu, but I get this warm fuzzy feeling when I’m there because Omotesando is one of my favorite places in the whole world

Maisen tonkatsu

Recently I’ve been looking forward to Saboten at the Hong Kong airport. I always plan my meal around it—meaning, I make sure I have appetite and time to eat before flying. There’s always a crazy line

Saboten

Here’s my favorite meal

Now, Yabu comes to SM Megamall. Recently opened last November 11th, I was invited to have dinner there by its owners Peachy and John Concepcion. One wall has manga

Yabu

The other has sake cups

Wall of sake cups

Peachy tells me it started with her husband’s obsession to bring authentic tonkatsu to Manila. The concept of Yabu was developed through the help of a Japanese consultant.
I can’t tell you how much food we ate.

Keri, Grace, Jay, Len

What I liked most were the rosu katsu (pork with a little bit of fat) and the plump Japanese oysters

Yabu

Here’s the seafood combo

Mixed seafood katsu

They were on soft opening when we dined there last week, so the service still needs some polishing (sesame seeds should arrive before food) and the seafood tended to crumble in its breading. But I’ll definitely be back with Jeroen very soon.
I’m just happy with have something like this in Manila, and very close to home.

Yabu, the House of Katsu is now open on the 2nd level Atrium of SM Megamall.
Open daily from 10 AM-10 PM.

Care for the Rare

As a mom of three boys (ages 3, 8, and 10), I can tell you they still appreciate plush toys.
Just this afternoon, Rustan’s sent two pieces from their endangered animal collection. Since there were two I gave them to the two younger ones. Christian got the cockatoo and Markus got the mouse deer

35

Trouble ensued when Ben apparently saw the mouse deer too. Luckily it didn’t turn into a biggie as they have tons of other plush toys.
I think it’s great that Rustan’s has collaborated with renowned plush toy manufacturer, Gund. Together they have produced an exclusive 11-piece collection of endangered animal plush toys. Supported by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the aim is to spread awareness among the young for the conservation of Philippine Endangered Species (PES).

13

Says Rustan’s President Zenaida Tantoco: “Rustan’s is proud of this collaboration with Gund because it is one of the more creative ways to spread awareness to our loyal customers. Not only will you receive a nice plush toy for Christmas, you will also know more about what’s going on in our environment.”

From now until December 31, 2011 a minimum single receipt purchase of Php 10,000 gives you a chance to choose any one of 11 GUND toy designs. Just present your receipt to the concierge to claim any of these special gifts:
Philippine Eagle (Haring Ibon) and Blue-Naped Parrot (Pikoy)

Bearcat (Binturong)

Buffalo (Tamaraw)
8

Tarsier (Mamag)

Warty Pig (Baboy Ramo)

Love my bag: Mills Canvas

Bags make me happy. A bag doesn’t have to be expensive, I just have to like it.
For me to like a bag it must be roomy, organized and not too common. It must not be too heavy and should be easy to open and carry around.
I found my Mills Canvas tote at Rockstar in Singapore. Rockstar is tucked inside the top floor of Cineleisure off Orchard Road.

Rockstar at Cineleisure

It specializes in kind of preppy, understated finds, such as Alphabet Bags

Mills Canvas bags are like L.L. Bean, but more expensive.
Made in Greenport, New York (at the tip of Long Island’s North Fork) Wm. J. You do not want to Lilia Cuntapay at the foot of your bed in the middle of the night. You do not want to see her walking around your house or in the garden wearing a long, white flowy dress.
Unless of course you are her relative and have to live with her or see her on a regular basis.
You may not recognize the name, but the face is one you would, if you have watched a Tagalog horror movie or two.
Lilia Cuntapay is the quintessential movie extra who’s always hired to play the aswang or some other apparition.
Now, Cinema One Originals in association with Postmanila presents Six Degrees of Separation From Lilian Cuntapay.
Written and directed by Antoinette H. Jadaone, the story follows the life of a “popular” bit player nominated for the first time in her 30-year showbiz career. Wanting to deliver the perfect thank you speech, she writes, re-writes, erases and re-writes again as her everyday encounters, pre-Awards Night jitters, and too many unsolicited advice overwhelm her mind.
On December 3, 2011, Saturday, watch Six Degrees of Separation From Lilia Cuntapay at the UP Film Center’s Cine Adarna. Starts at 7:30 PM.
Tickets at Php 100 only. Contact Rem at (0917) 901-2481 to reserve before they run out.

It Girl

First it was Sharon, then it was Kris, today there’s Anne.
The great thing about being a celebrity in the Philippines, is there’s not much competition. A celebrity endorser can have work for decades until someone more relevant comes along.
I remember when Sharon Cuneta used to endorse everything until Kris Aquino replaced her, hogging all the billboards and hawking everything from corned beef to substandard electric fans (sorry).
While Sharon is hardly convincing these days (not even Marie France), Kris Aquino continues to rake it in, while Anne Curtis is ubiquitous,  peddling everything from Swatch watches to real estate.
But what makes Anne different from the two is, if she doesn’t try too hard to be fashion forward (read: underboob) or she doesn’t sing, she’s actually all right.
Manila’s favorite cover girl has nearly 2 million Twitter followers, and is followed by and tweeted to by Paulo Coelho.

Screen shot 2011-11-24 at 7.34.10 PM

Hey I’m not a fan of Paulo Coelho, but if he tweeted me like that, I would brag about it too.
So today we formally opened the 7th Pepper Lunch branch in the Philippines at SM Megamall-A. I actually saw Alodia Gosienfiao last night at Pia Cayetano’s book launch—was gonna invite her to slice the ribbon, but was too shy.
Instead, we had Jeroen and Mich Dulce cut the vine.

Bitch Dulce was here.

After lunch, we went to Swatch to pick up something for Mich—I insisted she get the Jeremy Scott Double Vision for practical purposes, since she’s all over the place.

Jeremy Scott Swatch

That’s where we had the first Anne Curtis sighting.

IMG_2666

On our way back to Pepper Lunch, it suddenly dawned upon me that Anne was everywhere. I realized as Mich told me she copied her shoes and lipstick from Anne Curtis (read: effective endorser).

HBO-induced insomnia

When we were kids, there was no Internet or video games, so everyone pretty much watched the same TV shows in the ’70s and ’80s—from Man From Atlantis to Knots Landing.
For the next 20 years I practically stopped watching TV. There were other things to do, like work, and then the Internet came along.
Not too long ago, I discovered the joy of watching TV again via iTunes. Even better when my dad introduced me to Vuze.com and the convenience of torrents.
Now I can follow five TV shows at a time and watch them at my convenience—usually in the wee hours of the morning when the whole house is asleep.
The downside is, I’ve turned into an insomniac at night and a zombie in the daytime.
As I type this, my eyes are droopy and my body is tired.
Last night I watched my last four episodes of How To Make It In America. I don’t even remember where I read about it. I downloaded Seasons 1 and 2, started watching and got hooked.

HMAOS_One-Sheet_v1.qxd

I would say this and Awkward are the best TV shows I have seen this year. It makes Gossip Girl and all those other shows I was watching so lame and stupid.
This is the first male-centric show I have ever followed. Based in New York, I can relate because I went to college there and have an inkling about how the fashion industry works.
The story revolves around Ben Epstein (played by Bryan Greenberg) and his friend and business partner Cam Calderon (Victor Rasuk) who are trying to launch their own clothing label, Crisp.

howtomakeitinamerica_s2teaser_hd

How_to_Make_It_in_America_S1_Stills_001

With no money and no business plan, all they really have are Ben’s fashion sense and creativity and Cam’s guts and connections. They have no option but to borrow money from Cam’s ex-con cousin and thug, Rene Calderon (played by Luis Guzman). Jeroen loves this actor, but personally I want to fast forward all his scenes.

how-to-make-it-in-america-04-1024

When this fails, they fall back on Ben’s former schoolmate, David Kaplan (at left, played by Eddie Kaye Thomas) who is Wall Street rich but desperate to be cool.

how to make it 204

Lake Bell plays Ben’s ex-girlfriend, Rachel Chapman, whose lifestyle goes from OK to sad, based on bad decisions.

How_to_Make_It_in_America_S1_Stills_002

When her relationships apart, she hooks up with a dog walker/drug dealer Domingo (L) who has some money business with Cam. (I hate his parts too. I don’t get why these people think he’s attractive.)

How_to_Make_It_in_America_S1_Stills_003

There are many other characters, such as Nancy Frankenburg (played by Gina Gershom), a powerhouse New York PR who gets involved with Ben in many ways.

HOW-TO-MAKE-IT-IN-AMERICA-In-or-Out-Season-2-Episode-2

Basically everyone in the show is a whore and a druggie. I am shocked how they openly show nudity (male and female) on HBO and how times have changed. So I would not recommend the show to kids.
Tell you frankly, I got hooked because of Bryan Greenberg. I have not seen a present-day actor who is so beautiful, expressive and angelic, even while playing a man whore. He carries clothes so well, I just love seeing his outfits.
He is, what Grace would call, a tall glass of water (refreshing) and easy on the eyes.

Bryan Greenberg 4

Lets not forget the cool soundtrack.
I finished two seasons or 16 episodes (25 mins each) in just three days, and am wondering when Season 3 comes back.

He’s just not into you—at all

$

I don’t wanna put a girl down when she’s already down, but frankly, she could’ve used these presents.

He's Just Not That Into You

He's Just Not That Into You

I had a gay “boyfriend” in college. It was so innocent. He was tall, cute, and dressed better than everyone else.
He said “I love you” on the phone but never DTRed (defined the relationship). I waited for our first kiss to happen. When I tried to hug him, he said, “This feels awkward.”

It was the ’80s, he loved The Communards and Bronski Beat. He wore makeup better than me. Then the makeup started to get thicker. He started to wear skirts and fake fur.
Then one night, I saw someone cuter. I made a mental note to make that boy my next boyfriend. Two years later, he was mine. He turned out to be a bastard, but at least he was a real guy (I think).
I’ve had my share of bad boyfriends, but luckily I married the right one. Some say you have to kiss a few frogs to get to your prince.

I was 17 when it happened. I was not 27. So I don’t understand why the pretty young thing who could get any guy she wants chose to be with this guy whom the whole world knows is gay. Even I tried to warn her via blog entries: You’re making a mistake. Look at the signs. He’s just not into you. I don’t care if he has a son. I can name you ten other gay men with kids, some of them happily married, quite frankly.

At first we thought it was a publicity stunt to gain more endorsements via “love team.” And then, upon talking to insiders, we found out you really did love him, but his heart and mind (and body) were elsewhere. I won’t kick you when you’re down because you wasted two years of your life. But it didn’t have to happen because you’re young, and pretty and have a choice. You’re not a teenager and this is not your first boyfriend.

If he did lead you on, then he is a mean, screwed up user. You deserve an apology, and he should never lead any other woman or the public to believe that he is straight.
I’m not a fan, but I’m on your side because I have been there.
It’s a sad thing, as a public figure you have to wash your dirty laundry in public. How humiliating for the public to know that you wasted years on a lie.
Here’s hoping that you move on like I did. There is life after investing your time, years, emotion in a gay man. You have everything ahead of you. As for him, I don’t really know.
