This was the weirdest day ever, filled with stress and blessings both.
It was not a good day, but it had its perks. I’m just glad to be safe in bed.
It started with panic buying at Jean Paul Hevin at the IFC.
These are not entirely mine, but whoever is getting the big present is so lucky!

IMG_2682

Then I had to buy my favorite sesame raisin bread at City Super before my diet starts tomorrow :(

IMG_2683

I had one hour to shop, so I went to Vivienne Westwood in Causeway Bay. I also grabbed a Joyrich x Lesportsac laptop case at Sogo before rushing back to the hotel.
I made it back in time to go to the airport with my mom and sis.
Four Seasons is cool because they send these guys to help us check in at the airport. May tagabuhat pa :)

IMG_2685

All these bottles people left behind before the X-ray

IMG_2686

I love these little carts. I wish our malls would have them or something. It would make shopping much more fun.

IMG_2687

My sister saw Anthony Bourdain alone at the Disney store, while I was buying lunch at Saboten, a fast tonkatsu place

IMG_2688

I love the tenderloin

IMG_2690

Oh, and a Japanese guy helped me, as I couldn’t carry my tray and push my cart at the same time. He pushed my cart for me. What an angel. I thanked him in Japanese.
Here’s my meal:

IMG_2692

I love you. Marry me.

IMG_2694

And oh, my sister was upgraded to First Class because she is a frequent, frequent flyer (like it’s not funny).
She offered her seat to my mom, but my mom and sister decided to give it to ME, knowing how much I love nice plane seats. I had an amazing time and slept like a baby.
This is Cathay Pacific First Class.

Here’s my seat

Check out the drink and magazine compartment

and this wonderful closet—all your stuff is just close by = Love

IMG_2706

Unfortunately I didn’t eat because, well, I already had tonkatsu at the airport. I wanted to sleep anyway.

Jean-Paul heaven

If you’ve been to Jean-Paul heaven, you will never go back to Hershey’s, Marks & Spencer, or Royce chocolate (currently what’s in the house).
I discovered Jean-Paul Hevin last year in Hong Kong, all because the chocolate lollipops looked so irresistible. They look like little men in bow ties.

Sucette Chocolat, Jean-Paul Hévin, Shinjuku Isetan

My favorite is caramel. Grace likes dark and caramel. My dad seems to like the macarons.

Macarons from Jean-Paul Hévin

This time I bought myself a present. I love that it came in this reusable cooler bag.

IMG_2718

Inside, boxes of chocolate and a teddy bear (not tiddy burr).

IMG_2719

Cause sometimes you need to buy yourself a present.

IMG_2720

I’m really amazed how beautiful the packaging is

IMG_2721

These are my new discovery

The pure chocolate caramel buttons with rock salt are to die for. So worth the price.

Angel Guirado signs with PR Asia Worldwide

Yesterday, Grace, Jay and I met up for a press conference at the Dusit Hotel to meet the Azkals’ Angel Aldeguer Guirado.
Guirado, a Spanish–Filipino professional footballer who plays midfielder, formerly for Spanish club CD Ronda, and currently for the Philippines national team, officially signed a representation deal with PR Asia Worldwide.

Angel Guirado
Photo: Magic Liwanag

Guirado recently delivered a breathtaking goal to boost the Azkals’ home game against Sri Lanka in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Now he is all eyes on getting the best endorsement deals and other commercial projects through PR Asia’s help.
Apart from commercial success, Guirado hopes his newfound ‘alliance’ with PR Asia will lead into the blossoming of his international career in football.
“For now, he is looking to play outside the Philippines but of course, he would also want to go where there is an opportunity for him,” said Rafa Garcia, his translator. “Also, he wanted to play outside Spain.”

Angel Guirado

As of the moment, however, the 26 year-old Guirado affirmed that playing for the Philippines is what matters more.
“He chose to play here for the national team since this is an opportunity for him to play for his motherland,” Garcia said.
Guirado is one of the more dutiful Filipino players who have recently made football big in the country.
But before becoming one, he was just an average kid so passionate about football like the rest of his countrymen in Spain.
As a four-year-old, Guirado started hitting the pitch with his older brother in his hometown Malaga.
At five, he started playing against boys older and bigger than him.
“During his younger years, before bed, he would put his long socks already and place his football shoes beside him so that ready na when he wakes up,” Guirado’s Filipina mother, Angela, recalls of his son.

IMG_2736
Grace Velasco interviews Angel Guirado through interpreter Rafa Garcia.

Guirado then took his interest football a little notch higher by playing for his school, San Estanislao de Kostka, up until high school.
After attending Instituto Mediterraneo for two years, and Safa Icet for another, Guirado then commenced his exciting career in football.
He played in different clubs in Spain until he decided to play for the Philippine national team early 2011.
Guirado instantly made an impression in his first Azkals appearance. In the team’s clash against Myanmar in the Asian Football Condeferation Challenge Cup qualifiers held early this year, he scored his first international goal to settle the match to a draw. Guirado then contributed two goals in their winning game against Bangladesh.
The 6’3″ footballer has since been getting acclaims for his stunning performance, which was accomplished over his yet so brief stay in the team.

Ask Dr. Belo

Almost a month after my lipo + BodyTite, I’m a believer in Dr. Vicki Belo.
Though not completely healed and still sore, itchy, numb, lumpy, and swollen in some spots, overall I’m happy I did it. It is so worth it.
My arms have been shrinking and improving steadily since last week. I’m amazed how my shoulders and biceps suddenly have “cuts”. I can’t wait to see the final result.
Already I can’t stop staring at the mirror. I can wear shirts with shorter sleeves and not be ashamed that I look so thick. Slim arms can really make you look thinner, younger—even though I have not lost weight since the procedure.
(No worries, I am so motivated to exercise and change my diet.)

Do you have a beauty question for Dr. Vicki Belo?
Now you can ask the expert herself as Dr. Belo answers questions in a 30-minute live streaming show on the Belo website. The topic for the evening is Basic Skin Care.

Disorganized mess

$

Years before the Azkals became popular, their Dutch uncle Victor dreamed for our boys to become football players.
With no intervention from either me or Jeroen, the boys just naturally picked up basketball and became fans. Maybe because basketball courts are all over the place.
So when I heard Kobe Bryant was coming to town, I begged for tickets and got them through the kindness of Ogilvy & Mather Philippines, who handles PR for Nike.
They gave us 4 Patron tickets and 8 Upper Box tickets. Because Jeroen’s best friend Joris wanted to take his two kids and we wanted to take Yaya Bhing, I gave away the 4 Patron tickets to my friend Tina’s kids.
Because the kids could only come after school, we arrived at Araneta Coliseum exactly 5 PM and saw this humongous line.

IMG_2799

We had to go to the end of the line. A couple of pictures taken once inside, we made a quick stop to the restroom (which is in DIRE need of renovation by the way, much worse than NAIA), bought food, before we could enter the venue.
Only to discover as soon as the door opened that it was PACKED with people in a very scary way. Think sardinas and mackerel style—all the aisles were full and nowhere to pass. No ushers, no flashlights, nobody helping us find our way.
We were struggling in the dark. I was scared for my children.
I begged a guard to help us, he wouldn’t budge and I offered him money to help us. He refused the money and refused to move. I had to reason with him to help us find our seats. He moved.
But he led us to the wrong section. We ended up outside where we first started. He left us.
I asked the door person to help us. He was confused with people shoving tickets to him. He was frozen stiff. He couldn’t move, didn’t know what to do.
So we found another guard. He led us to a section and left us, so I led our group of eight in half darkness until we reached Section 318 of Upper Box A and counted seats 1-8 (which was on our tickets).
At this time I was already upset because people were sitting everywhere and obviously our seats. I motioned for the people (not in a friendly way, mind you) to get up and they did. Two people refused to budge. I heard them say, “Hindi tayo aalis.”
I called the guard for help. He looked at all our tickets. We were all in the wrong section—us and them.
#Award. I wanted to DIE. I asked everyone in our group to get up.
The guard led us to the correct section just a few steps away, and the people I shooed away grumbled as they claimed their seats back.
Once again I had to shoo eight people from our seats—the right seats. Some of them refused to budge, but we had tickets.
Finally we secured our seats and the children were safe from the possibility of a stampede.

IMG_2805

Kobe played to a responsive crowd. Ben lost his voice shouting. Less than 30 minutes later, it was over.
People following me on Twitter were shocked how fast it was—reason being half the time we were looking for our seats.
We headed over to Max’s at Scout Tuazon, where the kids had sinigang and fried chicken.

IMG_2815

IMG_2827

I had fish.

IMG_2829

And then we went home.
It was my first time to sit at Upper Box and I would never do it again.
As a mom, I felt like a failure because I put my kids’ safety in jeopardy. I should’ve kept the Patron seats (well, next time, if there is a next time).
When I got home, tired from a day of trying to be a good mom, I got a very nasty tweet from a girl who witnessed my shooing away people—not knowing what hell we went through, the fear I felt for my kids, all because some people allowed this mess to happen, that people were allowed to sit and stand anywhere against the safety of the general public.

Just now my husband saw this at the Philmug forum. Somebody who was there posted:
“Anyone have an idea why at around 4:30 PM, people from Upper B started going down to Upper A section? Who started it coz it was really chaotic? I’m not sure why they were allowed to do that.”
“I’ve heard that security themselves allowed it. Same goes with General Admission to Upper box,” went one reply.
True enough, when we arrived and showed our tickets, the usher said it was already “free seating” everywhere.
I’m writing this to let people know Kobe Bryant is huge, literally and figuratively. When he comes over you have to consider security, safety, fire codes seriously.
Araneta Coliseum also needs to get their act together and it’s about time they renovated.

Steven Meisel shoots Jimmy Choo’s latest ad campaign

Jimmy Choo unveils its Autumn Winter 2011 advertising campaign to launch in August and September books globally, shot for the first time by fashion photographer Steven Meisel.
Conceived by Jimmy Choo Founder and Chief Creative Officer, Tamara Mellon, the campaign is inspired by cinematic 1970s Parisian glamour and conveys the darker, subversive side of femininity.
“This season I looked to the women who have always inspired me for their chic, empowered sense of dress. The creative talent of Meisel transports us to a moment of stolen romance, perfectly capturing my vision for the season and the energy and spirit of the Jimmy Choo woman,” Tamara said.
Meisel photographed models Raquel Zimmermann and Ben Hill in New York City’s Waldorf Astoria.

Jimmy Choo Autumn Winter 2011 AD Campaign (2)
Perched broodingly on a satin strewn bed, clutching the new CATHERINE bag in luxurious black softbox leather and leopard print pony, Zimmerman channels French film noir heroines, wearing vixen-like FLORA, a buttery soft suede, black open-toe lattice-style boot.

The collection of Jimmy Choo shoes and handbags takes its cue from the early ‘70s and the sultry stars of the time; icons Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Rampling, and Veruschka, all admired as much for their beauty and style on-camera, as for their allure and innate sense of style off-camera.

Tea is served, as poised in her hotel suite with ladylike classicism, she wears FLAXELY, a bootie in black suede which criss-crosses its way over the foot and up to the ankle in a perfect slim fit.

In the Philippines, Jimmy Choo is exclusively distributed by Stores Specialists, Inc. (SSI) and is located at Greenbelt 4, Ayala Center, Makati City.

On Sunday, Twitter was all about the girl who cried gang bang or “rape”.
It’s insignificant “model” Amanda Coling vs. four members of the Philippine National Football team, better known as the Azkals.

Screen shot 2011-07-17 at 8.51.53 PM

She made the rounds of all the gossip shows, including Showbiz Central with Pia Guanio.
This is painful to watch (read: very long)

She explains why she decided after one month to come out and cry rape—cause she was dropped out of FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women, presumably after the rape rumors came out.
But her credibility is whacked as this surfaces on Facebook (read: scary).
Disclaimer: Phil Younghusband is not one of the Azkals implicated in the case.

So please let this issue die. The issue became really tired by Sunday night. I just really wanted to say, she doesn’t sound like a victim. This is not Jodie Foster in The Accused.

How to celebrate Philippine Star’s 25th

It’s the Philippine Star‘s 25th anniversary this month, so lots of events are happening in the city.
You may have noticed a few billboards on Edsa celebrating the personalities behind Philippine Star, such as columnists Ting Ting Cojuangco, Lucy Torres Gomez, and Rissa Mananquil for Bench.

Tingting, Lucy, Rissa

Recently I did a photo shoot for Bench with Star columnists Adel Tamano, Quark Henares, Erwin Romulo, Jessica Zafra and Stephanie Zubiri. I think it’s coming out during the big anniversary party later this month.
Also Margarita Forés concocted two dishes especially for me and my editor/mentor Millet Mananquil.
The dishes are part of Philippine Star and Ayala Malls’ EAT Dining Festival from 8 July to 30 September 2011 only.

IMG_2755

You can get the dish for free if you use your BPI credit card card (minimum Php 1,500 purchase at Ayala Malls) or you can order à la carte at participating restaurants.

Margarita created Queen Millet’s Bouchee ala Reine 25, a vol-au-vent (hollow case of puff pastry) with a melange of 25 creamed enoki and shimeji mushrooms spiked with champagne, watercress garlic cream, asparagus, mixed greens with white wine dressing. Available at Lusso, Greenbelt 5, Makati, for only Php 260.

Queen Millet's Bouchee ala Reine 25

For me, Margarita made Cecile’s Spaghettini ‘Il Classico ala Chuva: garlic, chilli pepper, parsley on spaghettini cooked in extra virgin olive oil and topped with bone marrow.
Available at CIBO Greenbelt 5, Glorietta 4, and Trinoma only.
Php 208 for a single order and Php 365 for La Famiglia.

Cecile's Spaghettini 'Il Classico ala Chuva

Meat lovers Grace, Jay and I tried it at Cibo, Greenbelt 5, along with two orders of Tagliata di manzo Aglio Rosmarino. Washed down with a tall, cool glass of red grape shake, it was the perfect end to a satisfying meal. (Read: busog).

Thank you, Margarita Forés, Anthony Prudencio, Robert Lim, and your team!

PARIS—To celebrate its Holiday Collector’s Series collaboration with Jonathan Adler, Lacoste hosted an exclusive event last June 24th inside the Petit Palais South Gallery and lush garden.

Polo shirts designed by Adler were worn by models playing mixed doubles on a tennis court installed in the gallery.
Under the portico surrounding the garden, guests were invited to play Jonathan’s favorite sport, ping pong.

French sound sensation Yelle gave an incredible live performance.

Jonathan Adler for Lacoste (8)

Guests received a Jonathan Adler for Lacoste summer paper fan—to keep the heat at bay for the rest of the week.
Bite-sized BBQ morsels along with baby burgers and hot dogs were served.
A dedicated Cosmo Bar ensured guests got into the New York state of mind even in Paris.
Desserts included charming mini cupcakes and doll-sized ice cream sandwiches.

Jonathan Adler for Lacoste (1)

Each year, Lacsote commissions a guest designer to re-imagine its iconic L.12.12 polo shirt as part of the Holiday Collector’s Series.
Past editions have included UK design stars Tom Dixon and Michael Young, Brazilian brothers The Campanas and most recently, contemporary Chinese artist Li Xiaofeng.
For the 2011 edition, which is the sixth in the series, Lacoste invited American designer Jonathan Adler to conceive an exclusive and equally exciting polo and packaging project that may very well leave you questioning whether it is better to give or to receive.

Jonathan Adler for Lacoste (15)

Known for work that mixes modernist forms with bold colors and groovy graphics, the Jonathan Adler name is a promise of impeccable craftsmanship and distinctive design. His contemporary yet timeless style—an aesthetic he calls ‘Happy Chic’—is every bit as vivacious and unique as the designer himself.
Committed to producing beautiful collectibles for the ages, the company’s motto is: ‘If your heirs won’t fight over it, we won’t make it’.
For the Lacoste Holiday Collector’s Series #6, Jonathan has created unique polos using contemporary twists on traditional needlepoint techniques, one of the crafts he often incorporates into his own design work.

Jonathan Adler for Lacoste (16)

Jonathan Adler for Lacoste (17)

“I love the way Lacoste feels totally contemporary but also has an element of nostalgia,” Jonathan continues. “With this Holiday Collector’s Series project, I wanted to evoke the nifty and sporty feeling of American country clubs in the 1960s.”

The Lacoste Holiday Collector’s Series #6 will be available in Manila this December in all Lacoste boutiques at Greenbelt 3, Rustan’s Makati, Rustan’s Tower, The Power Plant Mall, Megamall, The Podium, Mall of Asia, Gateway, Trinoma, Eastwood Mall, Newport Mall, Robinsons Galleria, Robinson’s Place Manila, Alabang Town Center – Corte de las Palmas, Ayala Center Cebu, SM Davao, and Abreeza Davao City.

Italian elegance and style by L’Inglesina Baby

$

It began with the passion of the company’s founder, Liviano Tomasi, for four wheels and mechanics in general.
In December 1963, accompanied by his brothers Augusto and Sergio, Tomasi embarked on what was to prove a far-sighted and courageous business venture: he created L’Inglesina Baby and, with it, the production of the first English-style prams.
