Galaxy Tab marked down!

Hmmm....is there something wrong with me because I prefer the Galaxy Tab to the iPad?
Thing is, I prefer reading actual books and magazines to e-books. I love book stores and the smell of paper.
As for games or apps, I'm not interested.
Galaxy Tab is for traffic, emergency surfing, killing time, and tweeting.
And I like that it uses a normal size sim, not micro.
As for weight, I find the iPad too heavy to carry in my bag everyday.
Size matters to me. I love the Galaxy Tab because it's so compact.

Galaxy Tab vs. iPad

So I feel like an oddball when Apple snobs put down my Galaxy Tab and when I hear of people returning it.
Then again my choices aren't usually popular. But I make up my own mind.
I love my Galaxy Tab and now they're on sale.

I bought a globe

The recent events in Japan have made me buy a globe at National Bookstore.

Globe
Photo: Ana Zamora

So much happening in the world. I'm sorry if I'm not eager to accept trips/junkets right now because I'm afraid to leave my kids. The recent events are all biblical and apocalyptic to me. Political unrest, earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding, and volcanoes erupting all the same time scare me.
Every time some global or scientific issue happens, I have to consult with Miss Philippine Science, Grace Velasco to ask where is the tsunami/Pacific Ocean/Pacific Rim is, if I'm not frantically seatching for a map online and explaining to the household where the tsunami warnings are.
So I bought a globe and didn't realize how large the Pacific Ocean is. Now I can picture airplane routes, see the shape of Japan, and figure out where the nearest Target store is.

P.S. Not being Angelina Jolie/Mia Farrow here, but I really wish I could adopt a Japanese baby girl orphan, because the orphan stories in Japan are too heartbreaking.

Help Team Manila help DOT

From Team Manila:
"We took a couple of hours on working on our version of DOT's Local campaign.
The design takes a contemporary look that can rival other destinations around the world.
Some of the studies are revisions from the concept of DOT: the idea of traveling through water, land and air.
We think it's our responsibility to help out the image and branding of our country through design exercises like this. "

What you think of these studies for the "Pilipinas, Tara Na" logos?
My personal choice is #4. I love the colors.
7 and 8 remind of Doublemint gum. And the last one is uninspired.

Fault line under Philippine capital

$

The Philippine capital is woefully unprepared for a major earthquake that could hit at any time and kill tens of thousands of people, flattening nearly half the city's homes, experts warn.
The capital, Manila, sits on a massive fault line, and there are concerns the city's infrastructure would not be able to withstand a quake.
Authorities in the Philippines have been anxiously looking at the vulnerabilities of Manila, a megalopolis of more than 12 million people, following the devastating earthquakes to hit Japan and New Zealand.
Like those countries, the Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire—a belt around the Pacific area dotted by active volcanoes and tectonic trenches. And heavily populated urban areas on the Philippines' main island of Luzon, including Manila, sit on or near at least four fault systems.

I got three kind of "awards" this month from HP, Ayala Malls and Tita Virgie Ramos of Swatch.
First, this certificate of appreciation from HP given during a thanksgiving dinner at the Tower Club.

From HP

I love HP dinners because they always serve good food—whether it's truffle fries and steaks at Bistecca, or the best Chinese food at the Tower Club.
Tita Virgie Ramos gave me a Kitty-chan trophy for the work I did for Swatch recently.
And Ayala Malls gave me this glass thingy after guesting in their Merchant Forum last March 8.

"Awards"

David Celdran moderated the bloggers segment, which had JV Rufino of Inquirer, Lori Baltazar of Dessert Comes First, Abe Olandres of Yugatech, and myself on the panel.

Who knew Carmina Villaroel designed shoes?
This summer, the seasoned actress takes her Muñiz Shoes to Ensembles.

Carmina Villaroel

Muñiz Shoes is a brand owned and created by Carmina Villarroel featuring her own designs of classic pumps, trendy flats, heels, and more.
Originally sold online, Muniz joins the retail scene via Ensembles stores at Trinoma, Robinson’s Ermita, and SM Megamall.
Carmina says she was thrilled when Ensembles agreed to put her shoes in their store.
"I was so excited to fix and arrange the shoes. It’s a dream come true to see my shoes finally in the mall. I'm thankful to those who bought my shoes already. Ensembles is so supportive of my business, Muñiz shoes. I appreciate all the help and couldn't ask for more."

Six versions of Carmina Villaroel for Muniz Shoes, photographed by Mark Nicdao.

"I had fun shooting with my dream team at Bahay Tisa in Pasig—Mark Nicdao, Robbie P. and Pam Quiñones," Carmina shares.
"I love what Pam did to me—a fab tan! Unfortunately with my skin tone I can't have a real tan. Back in high school, I attempted to get a tan when I went to Boracay but failed. I just looked like a lobster. My skin turned red and got sunburned."

Carmina Villaroel

For summer, she loves wearing shorts, comfy shirts, tank tops, sun dresses, flowing skirts, sandals and flip flops.
And she hopes to have a vacation with her family either in Cebu, Bohol or out of the country.
On Ensembles' Sultry Summer 2011 collection, she says, "I’m a big fan of vibrant, bold colors! I love the entire collection. My super fave is the one-shouldered coral dress I wore during our shoot."

Be a fan of Ensembles on Facebook or follow them on Twitter for updates.

Parrot love!

After nearly eight years living in our own home, Jeroen and I finally decided to buy a pair of speakers we really like.
I've been eyeing these speakers online and abroad, but they are really too bulky to ship home.
Luckily, Secret Fresh at Ronac Art Center now carries Philippe Starck's Parrot speakers.

Jeroen with Parrot speakers

And we love them. Jeroen, my non-techy better half, was able to install them on his own.
They come in a pair, so we set them up in opposite corners of the living room.
After which Jeroen plugged his iPod one of them and played his Ferry Corsten.

Parrot by Starck Zikmu

Philippe Starck certainly made sure it delivers a sound that matches his aesthetic.
(My dad may disagree, but hey, it's good enough for us!)

And we have no regrets!

I may be 75% Filipino and 25% German/American/Spanish (believe it or not), but inside I'm 50% Japanese.
Since March 11, 2011, CNN has been my best friend, monitoring the latest developments on Japan.
It got me thinking about letting you guys know where Pepper Lunch sources its food, for the benefit of those concerned about radiation.
Though Pepper Lunch originates from Japan, our franchise comes from SFBI Singapore.
Through the help of SFBI experts, we are able to source choice ingredients for our Pepper Lunch restaurants in the Philippines.
Here's a simple chart that shows you where we source the stuff that makes Pepper Lunch rock.

Elizabeth Taylor, 1932-2011

One night many years ago, I accidentally caught George Stevens' "A Place in the Sun"(1951) while watching TV in my parents' bedroom. It remains one of the most haunting movies I have ever seen.

A Place in the Sun

A rich society girl (Elizabeth Taylor) falls in love with a stranger (Montgomery Clift) she meets at a family friend's house.
She loves him despite his being an ordinary blue-collar worker in a factory, not knowing he is already involved with another co-worker (Shelley Winters).
Their love is tested when the man is accused of murdering his pregnant girlfriend.
I can't tell you how may times I've seen it.

I feel like watching this again in honor of Elizabeth Taylor who died today at the age of 79.
May she rest in peace.

What happened to our Internet?

I'm currently being sponsored by two internet service providers, and while I'm grateful for the free services, I would rather pay for a service that is fast and reliable.
I'm really tired of free services that don't work because time is money.
I've had days where I could only post one entry because it took more that a day to upload photos to my Flickr.
So if you know of a great and fast solution to my problem please leave a comment below or email me at chuvaness@livejournal.com.
I am willing to pay.
But if you are a provider of reliable and fast Internet (must at 6mbps and up) and would like to sponsor me, I would be extremely grateful, put your ad on my blog for as long as it works and recommend it to everyone.
