If this develops, we will have the chicest first lady in the world!

Yes, Aquino dating his stylist, Liz Uy
By Christine O. Avendaño
Philippine Daily Inquirer

YOKOHAMA, Japan—Yes, they’re dating. And yes, he has broken up with Valenzuela Councilor Shalani Soledad.
President Aquino confirmed reports Friday night that he and celebrity stylist Liz Uy were seeing each other.
“We have been spending some time together as our schedules allow it. But I guess at this point, that is the extent of it,” he told reporters who asked him to comment on reports from Manila of the blossoming romance between him and the 28-year-old former love interest of actor John Lloyd.
“Is there anything wrong with that?” he said when initially asked if he and Uy were going out on dates.
Mr. Aquino also said at first that he was “meeting a lot of people.”
Asked later whether he was courting her, Mr. Aquino did not give a direct answer.
“I’m just recovering also from a recent engagement and there are many things to attend to,” he said.
At one point, after he was told that celebrity manager and TV host Boy Abunda had confirmed he and Uy were dating, the President retorted that Abunda was “not my spokesman.”

As a child of the '80s, I love hats.
We idolized Boy George and I really, really wanted to be Alannah Currie of Thompson Twins—you have no idea...

But how to find a hat in Manila? There was one existing milliner on Rizal Avenue, an old man I found in the Yellow Pages—yes, the Yellow Pages.
He was probably 80 years old and he made hats for me. I interviewed him for the Daily Globe in the '90s and then I don't know what happened to him.
In the New York '90s I shopped at stores like Patricia Field where I found this tulle hat, good enough for a drag queen.

Just before I got married in 2000, I was into my pa-cute Japayuki look, with a Burberry hat I found in London.

Then I walked into this Comme des Garçons hat at 10 Corso Como in Tokyo and fell in love.

Most recently I was eyeing this hat from Colette.
When I saw the Olsen Twins wearing them in Tokyo, I nearly died.

ABOUT HOLY CARABAO
Holy Carabao Holistic Farms in the countryside of Sta. Rosa, Laguna is a quaint farm amidst fields of talahib and a small forest of narra and mahogany trees. We practice organic and biodynamic farming so that all vegetables produced are healthy, nutritious and abundant with live enzymes.
Organic farming utilizes natural compost and nutrients in place of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to ensure that both produce and soil that nourish it are free from toxins.
In conjunction, biodynamic farming works together with the life forces, rhythms and natural cycles of the Earth. When we work with Nature, not against it, we are able to experience its power to heal and encourage life.
It is this healing power that we aim to harness in everything we harvest.

At Holy Carabao, all forms of life are important because we believe all of Life is interconnected. We treasure everything from seedlings that fall from the hardwoods to the wiggly worms that cultivate the soil.
The horses, sheep, chickens and pot-bellied pigs are raised lovingly and are left to roam free for a good part of the day. But of course, extra special attention goes to Kisses and Choc-Nut—our two adorable and very hardworking carabaos.
Come visit them and experience the joys of farm life. We’re only an hour from the big city but it feels like a world away.
To order veggies or schedule a farm visit, call Annabelle at (0939) 882-8722.

Hala! Another Filipina's off to Glee—and she's cute!

LOS ANGELES—Glee, the hit TV series which won the 2010 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series-Musical or Comedy—has become more popular with Filipinos ever since Charice Pempengco joined its cast in Season 2.
But now, Filipinos all over the world have another reason to watch the series. Another Filipina will be seen in the show—Hazel Faith Dela Cruz. They have just filmed the segment last Friday.
Hazel Faith is the winner of ETC’s Glee off to Hollywood Promo and is one of less than 10 lucky winners from around the world awarded with an all-expense paid trip to Hollywood with a walk-on role in Glee’s 2nd Season.
She arrived in Los Angeles a few days ago, accompanied by her mother, Chay de la Cruz, and Rolly Abuya, corporate marketing and events manager of Solar Entertainment, parent company of cable stations ETC and Jack TV, where the hit series is aired.

Hazel Faith

In an exclusive interview with the Asian Journal in downtown Los Angeles, Hazel recalled how she bested more than a hundred contestants in the Philippines.
“I remember that day in April distinctly. As has been my habit over the years, I asked the Lord to give me a verse for the day. He gave me a Bible verse in the book of Corinthians about singers and I didn’t know why,” said Hazel Faith.
“Later that day while I was watching TV, I saw the advertisement of ETC’s Glee off to Hollywood Promo. To join, you just come up with a creative video of why you deserve to win the special prize. I told my dad I wanted to join but didn’t think I had any chance to win. He encouraged me to go ahead and join. So, I got a camera and recorded myself singing one of my original compositions entitled Can’t Comprehend. That was five days before the deadline. I submitted my video and didn’t expect much,” she added.

Hazel Faith Dela Cruz

The middle child and only daughter of Ding and Chay Dela Cruz from España, Manila, Hazel has always loved singing. She takes after her mother who was a member of the Christian singing group, Papuri, when she was younger. Her brothers are Kaiser Jared (who introduced his younger sister to Glee knowing she would love it since she loves singing) and Kyle Jordan.
Hazel is in her 4th year in college, taking up Architecture at Mapua University. “To be an architect is my life plan but at the back of my head, I have always wanted to sing. I grew up singing in church. I have always been a member of our choir and the praise and worship team,” she said.
A few weeks after the submission of her entry, Hazel got a call from Solar Entertainment telling her she was chosen as one of the 20 finalists and was asked to go to the awarding ceremonies in Eastwood.
“I was so surprised. We went to the affair really early and I saw the other finalists. They looked so good and I thought, ‘naku, hindi na ako mananalo.’ Then, they showed the three videos of the top 3 winners and I couldn’t believe that mine was one of them,” said Hazel.
The announcement of the winner was really cool, as four of the top stars of Glee pre-recorded a video in Hollywood. Glee characters Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison), Finn (Cory Monteith), Artie (Kevin McHale) and Mike (Harry Shum Jr) were shown on video excitedly announcing, “And the winner is…Hazel Faith Dela Cruz.”

“I was so stunned. I couldn’t speak or stand up. I was just so shocked. I could not believe it,” said the pretty singer who admitted that she has been composing songs since she was 14 years old.
“Hazel truly showed creativity by singing her own original composition,’ said Rolly Abuya.
“I think a major reason why she won, aside from her singing her own song, was what she said in the video before the song,” shared her mom, Chay dela Cruz.
Hazel explained further. “I admitted that I didn’t have self-confidence. Glee helped me develop my self-esteem. I’ve told myself that I was just a simple girl. But I have been discovering that I have a flair for flamboyance, like the character of Kurt in the show. The show has inspired me to go after my dream. Because of Glee and God, I have been able to overcome my shyness and do what I wanted to do,” said Hazel.

Hazel Faith Dela Cruz

Hazel was ecstatic when she talked about the prizes she won. “I got free clothes from American Rag, a beautiful Esprit watch, gift certificates from Coffee Bean and from Red Box where our family enjoyed our time “sa videoke,” Glee freebies like notebooks, t-shirts etc. Plus of course, the major prizes of a trip for two to Hollywood, $1,000 pocket money, a tour of Fox Studios, a car service from the hotel to Paramount Studios (where they film Glee) and of course, an opportunity to meet and film an episode with the whole cast and crew of Glee. Grabe iba talaga magbigay ng blessings si Lord, overflowing,” shared Hazel.
A certified Gleek, (as fans of Glee are known), Hazel said she likes Kurt and Rachel in the show. Asked which character closely resembles Hazel’s voice, Chay, said she thinks it’s a cross between Rachel and Santana.
Asked what she plans to do after her trip, Hazel replied, “I have to go back to Manila right away because I have classes. Basta, I have told the Lord—here I am. Let Your will be done. So, whatever happens in my life, I will just give my best and trust the Lord.”

Not enough steak!

They say food is the way to a man's heart. In my husband's case, it's steak.
This past month we've had three steak dates.
First at Gaudí, Serendra, where you cook your steak on a hot plate

gaudi steak

The other day we were at Mamou, Serendra devouring an 800-gram Angus

Mamou steak

And tonight, well, we were invited to a dinner at Hyatt Casino Manila's The Fireplace, which is one of the most underrated restaurants in town.
You don't really hear about it probably because of its Malate location, and maybe the price.
Here's one place you'll want to dine in for very special occasions.
The dinner was hosted by Santa Carolina wines from Chile, which provided six different kinds of wine for all the dishes served.

IMG_5742

Jeroen said the wines were very good and high quality.
Due to the traffic we were a bit late but arrived just in time for the scallops on top of very thin orange slices.
Scallops are always good in my book.

Scallops

While waiting for the next dish, I was talking to Bianca Consunji's boyfriend who is a future pilot. I asked him questions about turbulence and things related to fear of flying. When I mentioned I needed a Rosary to go on a plane, Bianca said she had one too. Prove it, I said, and out came the rosaries, mine and hers.

Rosaries of Bianca and I

See?

IMG_5712

Fast forward to the Pan-fried Chilean Seabass, with wilted watercress and Cabernet reduction

Sea bass

Then the steaks came out: perfectly grilled American Wagyu beef ribeye Snake River Farm 6+.
Whatever that means. Silence was golden at our table. Yes, it was that good. But I was too stuffed I decided to donate half of my steak to Jeroen, who had polished his plate.

Grilled American Wagyu Ribeye

I noticed that Jude Mancuyas of The Frazzled Cook had polished his plate too and was eating quietly. I figured the steak was too small for the two guys. Jeroen was seriously in heaven and was hoping he would get another steak but was too shy to ask. So Jeroen, I will take you there on your birthday!
Chefs Jude and Jeroen approached the actual Fireplace to see how the cooking was done in ovens imported from Australia.
Jeroen says the lady on the left is The Master. She is the steak expert.

IMG_5723

Jeroen took photos of the steak before and after cooking.

The amazing oven thingy

IMG_5726

I felt so sorry for Jude and Jeroen. They looked like puppies waiting for manna (read: extra steak) to fall down from heaven

Still hungry

Wawa!

IMG_5729_2

As Hayden would say, sizzling hott!!

IMG_5733

I love a simple steak with no sauce and minimal sidings

IMG_5734

And for dessert, a heavenly combination of mango, vanilla bourbon cream and almond crunch cobbler. Wow.

With all due respect, the current government is hounded by so many foibles, it's no longer amusing.

1) Before he was elected, Noynoy's Twitter account had this to say

2) The bungled rescue-turned-massacre of the tourist bus carrying Hong Kong nationals, which had the President dining at a nearby restaurant while it was ongoing, also photos/footage of the President smiling while inspecting the aftermath.

6) And now, the DOT's current effort to sell the country with a brilliant campaign they came up with.

Critics have pointed out the campaign will confuse foreigners who might construe Pilipinas to mean Filipinas, and that we are promoting the women instead of the sights.

A note to all Internet Service Providers (including my own)

$
0
0
A few words from Richard Branson

Sir Richard Branson and iJustine

If you regularly use the web, I would ask you to spend just a few moments reading this.

Virgin prides itself on being innovative and challenging the norms but my views on how to treat customers are pretty traditional. Whether it’s a topped up pint in the pub, the full forty miles-to-the–gallon or broadband speeds - we should all get what we pay for. At Virgin, we believe in being honest about the service we provide. But there’s something going on in broadband advertising that’s just plain wrong.

Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) just aren’t keeping up with their promises. Many of them are advertising superfast broadband speeds they know full well they cannot deliver, offering speeds of ‘up to’ 20Mb but delivering an average of just 6.5Mb. And what does this mean for the customer at the end of the line? Buffering, delays and not getting the broadband you are paying for.

Faster broadband means better broadband, whether you’re surfing the web, watching TV online, downloading music or sharing photos. More speed also means more bandwidth, so the whole family can get online at the same time without the service grinding to a halt. Staying connected is central to our lives and we all deserve broadband that we can trust.

I’m challenging all broadband providers to be honest with their customers. And I’m asking you to challenge your provider as well.

Virgin Media is already delivering the fastest broadband in the UK and it’s prepared to be open about the exact broadband speeds it delivers. It’s the first ISP in the UK to publish the typical real world speeds its customers receive each month. This means every existing and potential customer can go online and see for themselves exactly what speeds they can reasonably expect. All other ISPs should be doing the same, so you can make an informed choice about how to spend your money, rather than having to rely on the fairytales and broken promises of current broadband advertising.

There’s a lot at stake here. If ISPs can get away with keeping customers in the dark about the speeds they actually provide, there’s little incentive for companies to invest in better services and improve your broadband.

We’re calling for change and, if you want to make sure that happens, please add your name to the Stop the Broadband Con petition.
