What happens when a young gay man falls in love with a woman?

$

That’s the central conceit behind Red Turnip Theater’s second offering, COCK by Mike Bartlett.
A sold-out hit when it first premiered in London in 2009 and subsequently during its off-Broadway run a year later, COCK revolves around a gay couple whose rocky relationship derails when one of them sleeps (and falls in love) with a woman.
Debates over one’s sexual identity explode when all three decide to sit down and “duke it out” over dinner.
Hilarity ensues when another unexpected guest turns up and loyalties are put to the test. As one character puts it, “It’s the ultimate bitch fight”.

Rem Zamora makes his directorial debut with COCK.
“We’re excited to be back in Whitespace. A lot of people who came to CLOSER said they enjoyed the intimacy of the experience and the space.”
COCK is a comedy with bite. No props, scenery or furniture. Just actors, sharp dialogue and some clever staging.

Rem Zamora

Zamora has assembled a tight cast of theatrical heavyweights for COCK’s Manila premier.
Topper Fabregas plays John, a young man caught between his gay lover and his growing attraction to another woman- W, played by Jamora.

Topper Fabregas
Jenny Jamora

Niccolo Manahan makes a theatrical comeback as M, John’s lover who isn’t about to let him go without a fight.

Niccolo Manahan

Rounding off this impressive cast is Audie Gemora as F, M’s well-meaning father whose sudden appearance at dinner throws everyone for a loop.

Audie Gemora

Cock is directed by Rem Zamora with technical direction and lighting design by John Batalla, set design by Denis Lagdameo, and sound design: Jethro Joaquin.
Whitespace is at 2314 Chino Roces Avenue Extension (formerly Pasong Tamo Extension), Makati

Haute Maroquinerie: a Louis Vuitton handbag for the elegant woman

There's haute couture ("high fashion" or "high dressmaking") and there's haute maroquinerie or "high leather goods."
They say there are only 50 haute couture clients in the world, where the world's richest women spend tens of thousands of dollars on a custom-made dress from Paris.
Now imagine spending a similar amount for a custom-made bag just for you, handmade in Louis Vuitton's workshop in Asnières, France.
There's no need to fly overseas to covet your own handbag as Louis Vuitton's Haute Maroquinerie service becomes available in Manila for a very limited time.
I was able to preview the very exclusive service at the VIP room of the Greenbelt 4 shop in Makati.

Lo

There's a special trunk containing all the leather samples, locks and finishes in many colors.

IMG_1990

There are eight kinds of fine leathers ranging from the supple, the firm and exotic, plus a total of 27 colors to choose from—all of which can result in 40,000 possible combinations.

Once ordered, each handbag will take months up to a year to deliver.
Those interested can visit Louis Vuitton Greenbelt 4 only until February 23, 2014.

Piandre opens Mother Ship and BGC salon

When I was in high school I had a classmate with perfect hair, nails and skin. I kind of hated her and wondered how she did it. She was rich, for one and had a bigger allowance than all of us. Like her wallet always had bills.
What I didn’t figure out at the time was that she spent a lot of time in the salon.
When we were kids we only went to the salon to get a haircut. I didn’t know about the magic of regular blowdry until I was already working. Now that I’m older and can afford it, I don’t ever go out without a blowdry.

In 1987, Piandre was new and easily became one of the best salons in town. Their Greenhills branch was always busy, having captured the doña/moneyed market and their daughters. For one, they have sterilized brushes.

Piandre

My mom was an instant fan and continues to be a regular 26 years later.
Growing up, all salons used to intimidate me, including this one. Even though I knew that Piandre was owned by my dad’s cousin, Linda Zamora Francisco.
Piandre, was originally supposed to be called Peandre—culled from the names of Peachy, Aina and Drea—Tita Linda’s three daughters.
“But it didn’t sound right so it became Piandre,” said my cousin Drea Zulueta, who is now general manager of 13 family-owned salons.

Drea gave me a tour of their recently opened branch in Bonifacio Global City, located at the ground floor of Two Parkade Building.

Piandre

The salon was quiet this Wednesday afternoon but gets busy in the mornings, after work and on weekends.
The new BGC salon looks modern and spacious with bamboo floors and matching chairs. Drea says they designed the salon themselves.

Piandre BGC

Drea and her family keep the business updated by taking regular trips around the world to attend trade fairs and to source new products and materials.
Drea herself started training under Vidal Sassoon in London in 2003. She now helps train Piandre stylists back home.

Aside from the large salon space, the new BGC shop has a men’s area, two VIP rooms and three wax treatment rooms. But what I find amazing is it has restrooms everywhere—like seven restrooms, including two separate ones for the staff. The VIP section has its own restroom. This lavatory is chuva-approved.

Piandre

The BGC shop has these magic mirrors I really love. See this logo at the bottom of the mirror

Piandre

Press that and the mirror lights up.

Piandre's magic mirrorPiandre's magic mirror

Each Piandre salon also has a mini store of hair products.

Piandre

Drea urged me to try Michael O’Rourke’s Rock Your Hair products to benefit my thin hair. Uhm, I can't resist this color.

Piandre

Among their wonder products are a dry shampoo powder for times you can't shampoo and need to freshen up, plus a wonder hair powder that covers “bald spots” on your scalp.

IMG_2262

Next we drove all the way to Timog Avenue, Quezon City where Piandre has opened a five-storey Mother Ship called the LZF Building (LZF = Linda Zamora Francisco). The four-storey building was designed by Carmelo Casas.

Piandre Timog

On the first floor is the parking lot, because Drea has a phobia of basement parking lots.

Piandre Timog

From here you take the escalator to the second floor, which houses a 600-square meter salon, the biggest in the Philippines.

Piandre Timog

It offers a full range of services including cut and finishing, color, nails, hair treatments

Piandre
Piandre

The Timog Mother Ship was quite busy this afternoon

Piandre
Piandre at Timog

The third floor, called the Salon Beautifier HQ, has a school setup. It will serve as a venue for training Piandre's 60 stylists. In fact Piandre often flies in experts from abroad to train their staff.
The fourth floor holds a magnificent ballroom that can rival any hotel ballroom in Manila.

Piandre

Love this VIP area. The ballroom can be rented for a fee. To inquire, visit the Piandre Mother Ship in Timog or call the numbers listed below.

Piandre

On the fifth floor is a roofdeck, which is still being finished.
Aside from all the services offered, Piandre’s unique selling proposition is that it distributes many special hair brands like Lakme (hair color and hair care), Macadamia Natural Oil products and services, Rock Your Hair products, the pregnancy-safe Barielle nail polish line, Kerastase and L’Oreal.
Piandre is also the official distributor of the Keratin Complex Smoothing System in the Philippines.

So sorry I haven't blogged in ages.
I got into a Twitter fight about two weeks ago and got bullied (my fault and I'm sorry. Deepak said so) so I decided to remove Twitter from my phones and lay off social media, including Instagram, Facebook, and well, my blog.
My son got sick on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Monday it was my turn to get sick up to this day.
I haven't been sick for years!! I had forgotten what a 39-degree fever feels like and it aint fun.
So all this time I was in bed medicating and playing Candy Crush.
I've also been reading Deepak Chopra's Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, which says I am exactly where I am supposed to be.

7 Spiritual Lwas CD

Which means I got sick because of certain decisions that I made (taking a bubble bath on a cold day, for one) and that God wants me to be right here, right now. With that I accepted my sickness and stayed in bed instead of forcing myself to work.

inspirational-quotes254

I am still in bed with a low fever, cold and cough. Just to be sure I'm not dying of pneumonia my friend Patrice dragged me to St. Luke's BGC this afternoon for a blood test and X-ray—both negative. (Thank You Lord!)
Last Friday I did have the pleasure of meeting the two big winners of my Samsung giveaway.
Both winners met up with me at my office. This is Mary Grace Raagas who can now replace her old Samsung phone with a Samsung Galaxy Mega. (That cute little boy in the picture is my husband Jeroen.)

Grace Raagas

And Anne Roselle Lara (L) who plans to give her prize Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to her sister.
I also got to meet her pretty mom Ohla.

Anne Lara

Well it's great to have an office. Now I can meet more of you readers, as I prepare my next giveaway.
Oh, and thanks to the great people at St. Luke's BGC ER and Dr. Dimagiba (indestructible) for his patience and who didn't see this coming.

Dr. Dimagiba

Hay! This cold weather kasi...

How to revive an old chair

$

I found this chair at Megamall and placed it in the boys' room a few years ago. It wasn't expensive but it is oh so comfy. The boys use it mostly while playing their video games on weekends.

IMG_1812

It has seen better days obviously. I didn't realize how ratty it was until recently.

IMG_1815

Luckily I remembered to buy some fabric at Ikea Singapore last January. I chose a Dutch-looking print that would brighten up any kid's room. I was about to dump it in the cart when the Dutch in-laws insisted on rolling it the proper way

IMG_1601

Back in Manila I tried to search online for anyone who could reupholster a chair—and then I remembered my friend Kristine Dee who makes furniture apart from her own jewelry line.
Kristine is my go-to person when I need to resurrect some furniture pieces. She is so helpful!
The chair was picked up from our house and delivered a few weeks later. They did an amazing job!!

IMG_2290

Not bad service for less than Php 2500—including pull-out and delivery.
If you're looking for a great, reliable reupholstery service in Metro Manila, email kdeestudio@mail.com.
Thanks Kristine!!

The new Louis Vuitton: a preview of things to come

It was around 1997 when I purchased my first Louis Vuitton bag—an Amazone! It was the only thing I could afford at that time. It wasn't until 2001 when Marc Jacobs created the Stephen Sprouse bags that I became officially obsessed. Takashi Murakami followed in 2002 and the love affair continued for a few more years until it became, well, tired.
I can't tell you how many Louis Vuittons I've acquired. Many of them I have sold or given away, but I still keep some special ones.
Truthfully I haven't found the brand that exciting, until they announced that Nicolas Ghesquière (formerly of Balenciaga) was taking over Marc Jacobs' position as creative director of the house of Louis Vuitton.

Nicolas Ghesquière

Meanwhile my friends and I have been wondering what kind of change he can bring to the fashion house which had tuned American, pop, and J-Lo, under the direction of Marc Jacobs.
To answer our question, my friends, here's a preview of things to come in Fall/Winter 2014-15.
A series of photographs, titled A Dozen Girls was recently photographed by Juergen Teller at the Louis Vuitton Headquarters in Paris.

From NAIA to Narita

I used to fly Northwest Airlines a lot during the '90s, between Manila and New York, and I had forgotten how nice it was.
These days Northwest is known as Delta Airlines, and last January I received an email from Delta offering ticket sales that seemed too good to be true. Business class to Narita started at US$589, plus taxes of US$240, came to about US$829.
Last year Jeroen and I cancelled our anniversary trip to Japan because of Yolanda, so I thought this was a good time to go and see if I can get a three-year visa (I did!). Never mind that the weather is a bit too cold for me.
Last Thursday, we left the house at 5 AM and arrived a bit early at NAIA for our 7:45 AM flight.
Good news: the airport looks like it's finally getting renovated.
Never mind the chairs and the carpet—these should be gone soon. We hope.

Hopefully to make way to better brands, edible food, and more international-friendly concepts (read: not native). Eek.

NAIA Terminal 1

The Delta flight was so pleasant! I am not a morning person. I did not sleep a wink because I had to wake up at 4:30 AM, so the flat bed seat with a view of my husband was really comforting to me.

Delta

I slept for most of the flight. Or I prayed even thought it was only slightly bumpy. I am still afraid of flying. But the flight attendants were so nice, like Badette who reads my blog and Stephen who is an old friend of ours.

Delta

Also met a reader named Gem or Jem who said hi to me before boarding :)
Travel tip: if you have a cold/cough, Drixine will be your best friend 30 minutes before landing.
Spray this into your nostrils to avoid painful eardrums and temporary deafness on the plane.

Is that why the tickets were on sale? Is everyone landing at Haneda instead?

What's your guilty pleasure? Mine are TV shows I watch when everyone at home is asleep.
It's my quiet time, and my current favourites are The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Scandal, and Girls. (I wonder what these shows say about me?)

Some of these shows I watch on iTunes, and some I download. Girls is my favourite HBO show, even though I'm not a fan of TV nudity. I'm a mom who prefers to keep the young ones innocent.
At first it seemed like Girls Season 3 was getting boring, but the last three episodes when Hannah and Adam got jobs and their lives began to improve, the show became exciting again.

girls

For those who enjoy Girls like me or other HBO and Cinemax original series such as Game Of Thrones, True Detective, Veep, and Strike Back, you can now watch them twelve hours after they premiere in the US—even before they air on HBO, as HBO Asia launches its broadband streaming service, HBO GO, in the Philippines, exclusively on SKYcable.

HBO Go - Girls

Subscribers of HBO GO can watch over 1,000 hours of uncut, award-winning HBO and CINEMAX Original content on computers, tablets and smartphones (iOS and Android) anywhere, anytime.

Meet Hamzah Marbella, Promil art prodigy

$

How do you bring out the best in your child?
A former classmate of mine got pregnant early and gave birth during college. She became a mom before most of our batch mates, and after four children she told me she believed children are born with their own personalities. Your job as a parent is to enhance the good in them and suppress the bad.

Ben's drawing

I don't believe in pressuring a child to become your idea of perfection. Nobody's perfect!
I do believe in unconditional love. Some children may be easier to love than others, but you don't give up on your child. Even if the child seems distant or troublesome, you love them anyway.
Because I believe love is an action word. If you love your child, your child will feel that love and give it back to you many times over.

The kids drawing

I'm not a stage mother or a hyper mom who likes to fill up their kids' time with activities. I believe in quality time and quantity time with the kids. I don't pressure them to get the best grades, they did that on their own. But even if they're aren't honour students now, I believe they are growing up to be fine young men we can be proud of.

Boys drawing at Vincent van Gogh museum

Recently Promil sent us art kits containing paint, brushes, a palette, and sketch pad.
I gave these to the boys before leaving for a quick trip to Japan, and one day they got bored and made these paintings on their own.

Promil

Ben, 12, painted a farmhouse

Ben, 12

Markus, 10, anticipated our arrival from Tokyo at night

Markus, 10

and Christian, 6, drew a house.

Christian, 6

Since the kids were very young, I always made sure there were art materials around. They don't have to be the next Picasso, I just want them to feel confident in expressing themselves through art. Though truthfully they are more into basketball, Legos, and Minecraft.

More passionate about art is child prodigy Hamzah Marbella, whose mom Elma made sure he always had books to look at. "He would use books as sources of inspiration. I bought him crayons and sketchpads, which became his toys," said Elma. Hamzah's first canvas was a 'magic slate' that Elma bought for him.

Hamzah Marbella

At 12, he is already a multi-awarded artist, with more than 50 national and international awards and recognitions, including a special citation from the National Commission for Culture and a Certificate of Recognition at the United Nation International Children’s Art Competition.
He is also the youngest member of the Artists Association of the Philippines.

Hamzah Marbella

Hamzah was also recently named Promil Pre-School’s Outstanding Child Artist.

Hamzah Marbella

He inherited his talent from his father Renato, who is also an artist.
"He would watch me paint from his crib," says Renato.
When Hamzah was bigger, he would look for stones, bottle caps, clothes pins and other things and transform them into art pieces like butterflies and flowers.

While their son was growing up, Renato and Elma also made sure that they provided him with superior nutrition.
Promil Pre-School, a powdered milk drink for children ages four to seven years old, was designed to help kids achieve optimal growth and development. The milk contains a unique combination of essential nutrients, like vitamin A to support healthy eye development, Iodine and & Iron that support brain development, Biotin and Zinc that support normal growth and help maintain a healthy immune system, Niacin that aids in healthy digestion and promotes normal appetite as well Potassium that promotes healthy muscles to support various activities of your children. All these are found in Promil Pre-School’s Nutrissentials.
It also has DHA, an important nutrient for cognitive and eye development, and AA which helps your child’s body absorb DHA better.

This post is dedicated to Rob Bryan de Jesus, who has been eagerly waiting for my next blog entry.

The truth is, I’ve developed asthma, and have been trying to catch up on work after my trip to Japan, which still has to be blogged.

Sometime in 2008, Jeroen and I walked into a showroom and I fell in love with a small studio space. At that time it looked like this.

Jeroen was so skinny :)

There was even a small kitchen

We could only afford a studio apartment at that time. Jeroen decided to make it an investment. We made the payments and in 2009 we got turned over our unit. Much to my disappointment. Here’s what we got:

Completely different layout. Kitchen is exposed on the left.

Cheap-looking cupboards

Unacceptable bowl toilet and shower

This is the only corner of the room I liked

We decided to hire Kellyn See and Rex Gapuz who I met online as Kellyn reads my blog. I hired them on the basis of their bathroom designs. Kellyn trained under Ed Calma while in the Philippines, and the couple spent a few years in Milan studying and honing their craft.

They are currently living between Sydney and Manila. We are still working with them on our home renovations.

Welcome to our studio, Part 2

Dear Rob,

It took us ages to renovate the apartment for several reasons:

1) I had to find the right designer.

2) The Philippe Starck toilet was so much cheaper from Amazon and had to be shipped here.

3) Kellyn and Rex, the designers, had to leave for Australia for a few months.

4) The TV cable had to be relocated.

5) The lamps had to be relocated.

6) The wallpaper was ordered from the UK.

7) The lamps came from Hong Kong.

8) The beds had to be special ordered. Etc.

Here’s the work in progress:

The ledge had the least problems—except when the cushions we ordered were too big and had to be redone.

Window and ledge

I’m happy with our small kitchenette. Though we don’t want to cook inside. We do have a microwave oven, coffee maker, and rice cooker, just in case.

Kitchenette

This study area was inspired by a stay at Hong Kong’s former JIA Hotel (now J-Plus). My idea was to create a hotel feel—therefore, no cooking, just minibar, refrigerator and simple appliances

Studio

The bed area had to be redesigned. I felt the wooden board made the place look smaller, so I had it removed and turned into a ledge.

Bedside

The bathroom had to be re-done three times before it was chuva-approved. The workers broke the sink by accident so I had to buy another one

After two years, it was time to move in! Yes, it took that long. I’m not a trained interior designer so it was hard to make decisions.

Shang studio

The amber sticker was ordered from Amazon, for bathroom privacy, in addition to blinds.

The idea I got from Singapore’s Quincy Hotel

Putting up the amber sticker

The wallpaper was ordered from the UK, inspired by yoo by Philippe Starck

Shang studio

This is my work area, with books, knick knacks, and a portrait of Chloe Sevigny by Terry Richardson

Shang studio

The lamps are by Innermost UK. The animal stool is from Dimensione, and the Kartell Mademoiselle chairs by Philippe Starck were purchased from Dexterton.

Shang studio

Only 38 square meters. I want to design spaces for a sideline!

Shang studio

The bathroom is tiny, but chuva-approved, with counter sink, wall-mount Duravit x Philippe Starck toilet, and glass enclosed-shower

Unfortunately the bathroom emits a funky smell—perhaps because it isn’t used often?

Someone please tell me what to do about it.

My hubby waiting for me to finish taking pictures for my blog. Not only is he hard-working, he is an angel.

Here’s a funny selfie we took some time ago. We plan to have movie dates/sleepovers here with the boys and popcorn.

One day I will list our apartment for rent online. Here are the keys to Hotel Whereabouts.

In the future, maybe I will have my own little hotel.

Return of the It bag

Oh my. Just when we thought It bags were dead and were just too happy to carry a Goyard, Herve Chapelier, or even an LL Bean tote—comes the new Chanel bags for Spring-Summer 2014.

I didn’t think it was my type until I saw the pictures on the website and they are just WOW.

I’m not a backpack person, so I’m more likely to get this—if I could ever get my hands on it—who knows?

As for girls who prefer the classic Chanel flap, this one looks like art

I should’ve checked while I was in Tokyo, but there was so much to do, so little time.
