How the case was made

While all the boys had their eyes on winning, us girls had our eyes on the players and that chica Louis Vuitton trophy case we had never seen before.

louis vuitton

I know it's a weird-looking trophy. Doesn't it remind you bulalo?

louis vuitton

Still, it deserves a better case than what it used to have.
(How I wish special Louis Vuitton bags were made for the World Cup.)
Now watch how the World Cup trophy case was made.

Here's something we didn't see on TV—a rabid fan trying to steal the trophy. Excitement!

Yes it's true. Louis Vuitton at Greenbelt 4 is temporarily closed for renovation.
They opened yesterday at Greenbelt 5, top floor, in front of Adora.

IMG_1333

I was there yesterday. The new store will be open only for 12-14 months, before they move back to Greenbelt 4.
So I heard the renovation will be major. It will include a second floor selling area at salamat naman.
The new store looks so much better than GB4, smells good and has new items seen on the website, so it's all good.

Patrice's three sons and my two sons go to the same school and share the same problem about the school bag each year.
I have a problem with the hideous, boxy local school bags available in the market, while Patrice was complaining that her eldest son's bag weighed 40 lbs.
These are bags that are pulled and carried six flights of stairs each day. PIty the boys and their backs.

The wheels of Ben's bags were damaged during the first week of school. Considering the bag cost about PHP3,500, I was really annoyed.
Though these bags supposedly have a lifetime warranty, the repair would take time, unless you want to take it yourself to some factory in Bulacan. So I blew my top upon hearing that.

The problem is not all about the hideous boxy bags. The problem is the amount of stuff they carry everyday plus the flights of stairs.
Patrice talked to the teacher and suggested a kindle for each student. I simply thought: not gonna happen in the third world.
It would take time before textbooks are made digital, and imagine the bidding and corruption that could happen at the Department of Education.
I also thought the school should probably provide lockers or lockable cubicles for each boy so they don't have to keep lugging the same stuff everyday.

And then I remembered the Zuca bag.
Designed for travelers, athletes, skaters, and makeup artists, the Zuca bag is a sturdy-framed and wheeled trolley that can be customized according to your taste.
You can choose the metal frame and ballistic nylon shell you want. The choices are numerous and irresistible.

I am tempted to get the Zuca with organizers for myself.

I love things that are practically a house. Plus, you can sit on it. Imagine while waiting at the airport.

Watch the video for more features.

For Ben I chose a camouflage bag so that he won't say no. Ordered last July 8 and shipped via Johnny Air, it arrived today.
Shipping was a reasonable PHP 4,000+.
All his stuff fits. He is thrilled that he can sit on it while waiting for his ride, or use it as a side table when the desk is too small.
The two extra wheels on the back of the bag allow him to drag it upstairs more easily. Plus, the bag weighs much lighter than the boxy bag used previously.

So now I'm already thinking of quilted one...

How it fits

And speaking of heavy school bags, I have fond memories of D-boy Trofeo, who was a classmate of mine at UP Fine Arts back in the day.
Back in the '80s, UP Fine Arts was on the third floor of the UP Library.
I was lucky that D-boy would look down the window and wait for me to arrive each morning, rush down the stairs and help me carry my bags up.
He is a cinematographer now.

Lots of questions on the Zuca bag.
Here's my son's bag all packed. On the right side is his raincoat.

IMG_1346

My son's school requires them to organize their books and folders into color-coded legal-size envelopes, inside are long folders. So yes the long folders fit but there is a bit of effort to put them inside. You kind of have to bend them a little, but they fit.

IMG_1349

I think it's a good idea to pack your kids' stuff into envelopes if you're planning to use a Zuca bag in case you want to bag pack vertically.
Besides the Zuca website, another place to buy them is Amazon.
Zuca offers free shipping for orders over US$100, so you might want to compare prices before you order.

Failure of promo

Kung may failure of elections, may failure of promo.

After speaking to my manager and major sponsor, we've decided to call it a failure of promo due to the untimely failure of Weather Pixie and the Who's Amung Us widget, which refused to be implanted on the sidebar of my blog.
During past promos, both were used as precautionary tools to distinguish which entries were photoshopped versus the legit entries.
Because both failed on the day of the contest, I could not decipher which entries were valid and I. Am. Sorry.

After receiving entries that were obviously Photoshopped and emails from people who admitted to cheating, I have decided to consider all entries null and void.
The prizes will be given away in a new promo when I launch the new Chuvaness.com in a couple of weeks, including prizes from new sponsors that are still offering prizes.

I apologize to everyone who watched the contest with me. I am disappointed as you are, but I don't have the heart to award people when there is the element of doubt.
I promise to fool proof the next promo with the help of friends before I announce it.
Please stand by and thanks.

Sorry ha, I can't help but compare.

Sure it's nice that they brought home the World Cup that looks more like a pata bone wrapped in gold foil, but look at Spain's rather snoring homecoming

and compare to the Dutch homecoming that looks as if they won grand prize—plus the number one DJ in the world, Armin van Buuren spinning for a crowd of 100,000.

Compare with Manny Pacquiao's homecoming. Heh?

Meet my uniform:
Black T-shirt, Nemeth jeans, Prada perforated bag and Hussein Chalayan's Urban Mobility wedge sneakers by Puma. I love the shoes because I can dress casually while it gives me a lift from being "vertically challenged."

Me at Puma

As the new Creative Director of Puma, Hussein Chalayan presents Urban Mobility as his latest endeavor. This special collaboration with Puma explores the notion of ‘Mobile Life’ bridging fashion and stylish performance.

Urban Mobility Puma
L-R: Puma CEO Jochen Zeitz, Hussein Chalyan and Francois Henri-Pinault, CEO of Pinault-Printemps-Redoute

Chalayan describes Urban Mobility as “a carefully studied hybrid collection between style and high-tech function and materials. It is considered a balance with Puma’s technical excellence and my narrative approach to design.”

Urban Mobility Puma

For his Spring/Summer 2010 footwear collection, Chalayan developed state–of-the-art materials specially made for the Urban Mobility label. One of the exclusive materials is the lightweight shoe sole made from Thermoplastic PolyUrethane (TPU), a high-grade type of plastic resin.
Black on black with flashes of gray and white is the signature color palette of the collection.

Urban Mobility Puma

One of the must-have pieces is the Urban Flyer Fold Men’s, with a suede gray flyer backing that creates an illusion on the heel. It can be folded down to allow one’s feet to slip in easily.

Urban Mobility Puma

The Urban Motus Women’s wedge shoe is also a must-have. The body is uniquely crafted like a men’s shoe with hard leather on the back, while the wedge high sole is constructed in a TPU encased shell to ensure lightweight flexibility.

Urban Mobility Spring/Summer 2010 footwear is exclusively available in Puma stores at Glorietta 4 and Bonifacio High Street.

Last night's crispy pata photo did not help. For merienda today, Jay and I ate something local—sisig at Dencio's.
When sisig is crunchy and sizzling hawt—as Hayden Kho would say—it makes me proud to be a Filipino.
Don't forget an ice-cold glass of Coke and two cups of plain rice for me and Jay.

Dencio's sisig

The rice came first. When it was served the waiter announced, "P.R."
"What?" Jay said.
"Plain rice, sir."
Geez, Pinoys really love to abbreviate everything.
Would G.R. then be garlic rice and J.R. java rice?
If you're really hungry, order E.R.
If you're on a budget, H.R.
And if you're at Pepper Lunch, why not have some B.P.R.?

If I owned a mall, I wouldn't allow restaurants to turn common areas with high foot traffic into kusinas.
I find it uncivilized. I don't like walking into people having a feast and I don't like people walking into me while I'm eating.

Mr. Choi, Galleria

What is the point of creating small store spaces and allowing tenants to just spill over to the walking area?
Whatever happened to the luxury of space?
Nowadays all malls just have carinderic areas.

Take a look at alternative ways to accommodate extra seating in malls with still a bit of privacy.
Ajisen at Langham Place mall, Hong Kong has a cute barricade—you can still see the diners, but not the food they're eating.

Nakakatakot.
Filipinos are really innovative when it comes to crime, instead of trying to make money the normal way—which is to work.
Last month my sister's friend Jade Bernas was shot twice in the stomach and once on the left arm as he resisted carnappers who hijacked his Starex van with members of his family aboard, along C-5 before dawn.
Bernas, 41, survived.
At around 5:15 AM, Jade was with his wife Lian, 42, their two children, houseboy and driver, on their way home to Greenmeadows after arriving from a holiday abroad.
Upon reaching the corner of C-5 and Ortigas Avenue in Barangay Ugong, a white Toyota Hi-Ace van bumped the rear right portion of the Starex, prompting Bernas and their driver to alight from the car to inspect the damage, according to the Inquirer.
"Four armed men came out of the Hi-Ace and pointed guns at Bernas, but he resisted and shouted for help, prompting one of the robbers to shoot him repeatedly. The robbers left Bernas lying on the ground and commandeered the Starex van with Bernas' wife and children and their houseboy still on board, police said.
"They dropped off Bernas' family members on Edsa at the corner of Estrella Street in Makati City, and drove off in the Starex followed by the Hi-Ace.
"Efren Gereda, who was driving his jeepney, saw the badly wounded Bernas and rushed him to the hospital, the investigator said."

Now car thieves strike again, this time on Edsa
By DJ Yap
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 13:23:00 07/16/2010

MANILA, Philippines – An American national and his Filipino wife lost their sports utility vehicle and P2.5 million in cash and valuables to armed car thieves who attacked them on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in Mandaluyong City early Friday morning, the police said.
The robbery occurred at 1:10 a.m. at the intersection of Edsa and Shaw Boulevard, investigators at the Mandaluyong Police Station said.
Frederick Allan Boutcher, 63, and his wife, Priny Mosquito-Boutcher, 52, had just arrived from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and were traveling in an Isuzu Crosswind, plate number XJY-499, when a red Toyota Innova bumped the rear of their vehicle repeatedly, the police said.
At first, Rogelio Maullan, 32, Boutcher's stepson, who was driving the car, ignored the bumps and did not alight from the vehicle, but the Innova overtook and cut in front of them, prompting him to stop, the Eastern Police District director, Chief Superintendent Francisco Manalo, said.
At that point, five men armed with short firearms got off the Innova and forced Maullan out of the car. The men then commandeered the vehicle with the Boutchers aboard, Manalo said.
The robbers dropped the couple in Galas, Quezon City, where the victims reported the robbery at the nearest precinct, Manalo said.
Taken from the Boutchers were $2,500 in cash (about P115,000), three cellular phones, several pieces of jewelry including the couple's matching 22-karat wedding rings, five suitcases containing their bank passbooks, a land title, and other valuable bank documents.
Manalo said the heist had virtually the same modus operandi used on the family of Jorge Bernas, brother-in-law of the Luli Arroyo, in Pasig City last month. The Bernas family had also just returned from the United States and were attacked along C-5 Road.
Manalo said he has instructed the Mandaluyong police to work on the sketches of the robbers quickly. The robbers were in plain clothes and did not have their faces covered, he said.
Manalo also said he went to the Southern Police District to coordinate efforts in tracking down the carjackers. He said they believe the robbers pick their victims by observing arrivals at the terminal.

My friend's third grade son was also riding a Starex van last month with just the family driver, on their way from school. On Shaw Boulevard, a man tried to open the car's door. Luckily it was locked and the boy was unharmed.
What are we dealing with here?
1) The Starex van is known as a "hot" car in the carnapping industry because it is easy to sell. Even though their van wasn't so old, my friend decided to sell their car for their safety.
2) Avoid C5 and Shaw Boulevard especially at odd hours.
3) Be aware that carnappers may be waiting for passengers coming out of the airport, so try to book a flight that doesn't arrive in the early hours of the morning.
4) Lock your doors at all times and do not stop even if somebody bumps your car. Just step on the gas and run for your lives.
5) Shouldn't cars have a tracking device so that once stolen you can see its location?
6) Can't local police run some decoys on these roads and just shoot to kill the robbers? We seriously don't need these bastards in our country. Not funny anymore.
7) President Aquino, please do something.
8) You are probably better off using an older car than the latest SUV or van.
9) It might help to enroll in Krav Maga, a self-defense class that teaches you techniques in defending yourselves from all kinds of evil.
10) Pray, pray for the safety of our children, our families, or country.

Hanging out on Sunday night while I was trying to write an article, Jeroen says, "Marky said a bad word!"
Me: "What did he say?"
Jeroen: "He said the V-word."
Me: "What Marky?" I'm looking at him. Markus continues to play his handheld game.
Jeroen: "Marky said 'vagina power.'"
Me: "Where did you learn that?"
Markus: "Yogi."
Me: "What does it mean?"
Markus: "Yogi said it's a girl's dick."
(Ok I was really scared they saw something online.)
Me: "Marky stop saying bad words ha."

* * *

I am alarmed because Markus, who is 6, knows the F-word but doesn't know what it means. He knows the word "sex" because Yogi told him it was about a man and a woman kissing while naked in bed.
One Sunday, while the children were playing at Lolo's house, we heard one of the kids distinctly say, "shit!"
My dad called the kids into the dining room and asked who said it. My two boys were shaking like a leaf.
Ben points, "Markus said it."
Lolo: "Why did you say it Markus?"
Markus: "Why? My mommy says bad words too."
Me: *eep*
Lolo: "Like what?"
Markus: "She said F-O-C-U-P."
Lolo is trying not to laugh.
Lolo turns to me: "O, why did you say that?"
Me: "Cause I was on the phone with the service provider and I was so mad I said, 'That's fucked up' and he heard it."
*eep*

* * *

So I told Marky I'm gonna call Lolo and tell him what he said.
I seriously thought my son would be scared at the thought because when I get mad the kids just laugh at me.
So much for my parenting skills.
I text my dad: "Dad please call me. Markus said a bad word."
And then I warned Markus: "O, I texted Lolo ha. Wait for his call."
Phone rings.
Me: "Hello dad. Markus said a bad word."
Dad: "What did he say?"
Me: "Vagina power."
Dad: "Let me talk to him."
Me: "Markus, o, Lolo wants to talk to you."
Markus: "No way."
Me: "Dad, ayaw niya."
Dad: "OK. This is what you do..."
Me: (listening)
Dad: "Tell him it will sound better if he says it in Tagalog. Let me talk to him."
Me: "Uh, wag na lang. Bye!"
Ugh.

I guess when you have a national treasure like Charice, everyone wants to step up to the plate and see what they can do for her.
Most recently, her godmother Dr. Vicki Belo offered help to make her face "cuter."
The botox/thermage procedure that was covered by the media, made its way to Twitter, the The Sydney Morning Herald, D-Listed, and hundreds of other news feeds.
When Harold Geronimo tweeted about it during Charice's concert at Eastwood Mall last Friday night, I didn't think the international media would pay attention.
Then it came out on ABS-CBN news, Chika Minute, and now Perez Hilton.

Harold sent me before and after pictures of himself with Charice. Notice the change in face shape.

charice 131319400

I am by no means for this procedure on the teenager, but I'm also curious to see how this turns out.
I mean who doesn't want to have a small face like Olivia Palermo. I sure do.
