It’s hard to review a movie that didn’t need to be remade. Instead money could’ve been spent wiser remastering the original.
It’s a lose-lose situation because if you have seen the original, you are bound to compare.
If you haven’t seen the original, there’s a good chance you might not get the storyline.
The movie starts out amusing enough, where four ladies decide to join the Manila Sunshine supermodel search for various reasons, besides the money, the car, and the house and lot.
There’s a fun runway show for the semifinals. I love this very gay portion where the girls show off their modeling skills.
The finalists end up in a yacht party, where an accidental fire causes a shipwreck.
Sadly the fire scene is still low-tech for the times (not campy at all).
The girls get washed up a deserted island with a bunch of himbos (male bimbos).
As for the main cast, Lovi Poe’s lack of acting skills becomes evident from the movie’s start. Here’s a pretty girl in dire need of Lee Strasberg, with her breathy, Marilyn Monroe whispers that just don’t work.
The island is where Rufa Mae shines as Lovi’s maid servant. The movie is clearly hers and she owns it.
For a newcomer, Solenn Heussaff is not bad at all (I smell a new gay icon)
Heart Evangelista, may have wooden dancing skills, but she is too pretty for words. For that alone, she deserves to be on the big screen.
Marian Rivera is deliciously camp especially with her dance moves, it’s entertaining
Too bad, all the boys in the movie had wooden acting skills. Clearly, there are no Alfie Anidos here.
John Lapuz is a gifted actor. I was just really bothered how they made him look exactly like media personality Queen Melo, complete with pearl earrings.
Queen Melo was in the audience last night with a good-looking escort.
So we heard from one of the actors in the movie, that they got the blessing of Queen Melo to copy his look for the movie.
Though the movie has its genuine LOL moments, sadly, there were many dull scenes.
The remake tries to copy too much from the original. Since they were remaking, they should’ve done some updating.
They could’ve realized that spreading fliers by helicopter is no longer relevant to the Internet times, and that only nurses and SM sales persons wear stockings in this day and age.
Wish they had a bigger budget to hire male actors who can act.
Finally, the movie just falls in the end with an anticlimactic fashion show that leaves a very bad memory.
Had they hired good stylists and designers for that last scene, I would’ve given it 3 stars.
As it is, I’m giving it 2/5 stars—happy I watched it, but won’t be asking you to drop everything and see it.
In a couple of years, this too will end up on Cinema One.
Enjoy the trailer.
