The first time I joined Twitter, it was to keep tabs on my friend Grace, who was one of the first to join.
i gained 3,500 followers right away before I was attacked by three Kris Aquino fans after a blog entry. So I quit.
I joined again and gained 3,500 followers right away. Then some bag-toting designers from the Middle East started to attack. So I quit again.
This is my third time to join and I'm now at 10,800 followers. Though I think of quitting often due to various reasons, I can't afford to lose the numbers anymore especially since so many friends (including the entire Magalona family) helped me gain relevance on Twitter.*
I'm currently on the receiving end of a jejetroll attack from a rabid fan who believes KC and Piolo are truly in love and that I am the anti-Christ.
As much as I would want her to disappear with a tsunami, it's Lent and I have to be charitable.
Here are the facts of Twitter as I see it:
1) *You need at least 10,000 followers to be relevant, cause anything below five figures looks dismal.
When Manny Pacquiao tweeted, he got 8,000 followers right away. Charlie Sheen broke the Guinness Book of World Records by gaining 1 million followers upon signing up. As for me, it took about 10 months to get where I am.
2) Twitter belongs to celebrities and artistas, or friends of artistas. The more showbiz you are, the easier to gain followers.
3) I sometimes wish Twitter would have a joining fee—to separate the chaff from the grain, so to speak.
4) If you say something negative about Kris Aquino/Sarah Geronimo/Charice Pempengco, or in my case, the freaking "love birds", be prepared for a barrage of jejemon attacks.
5) Don't keep tabs on who unfollows you or you will become crazy and paranoid.
6) Twitter is a great source of gossip, breaking news, and can make traffic bearable. It is also a great place to vent if you feel like you're about to combust.
7) At the same time don't get mad if a friend unfollows you as Twitter is not real life. I find that some people's tweets do not match my perception of them.
8) Twitter allows you a peek into someone's brain. For example I've learned that some good-looking guys are really hollow upstairs.
9) Don't be too nega or you will quickly lose followers.
10) Be friendly to your followers if they compliment you or ask you a question. It won't hurt to respond once in a while.
11) If you regret what you tweet, you can always go to http://twitwipe.com/ —a very handy tool when you have Twitter's Remorse.
12) Kelly Cutrone handles Twitter trolls best. I should study her tweets more closely.
13) It is very easy to unfollow someone who tweets their Foursquare status. Seriously, who cares?
14) The "block" and "mark as spam" buttons are your best friends on Twitter, besides your real friends on Twitter.
14) If a celebrity or artista retweets your tweet, you are sure to gain followers.
15) If you defend an artista who is under attack and that person retweets you, you will also gain followers.
16) I like to believe in quality over quantity, but on Twitter it's mostly about numbers.
17) Twitter doesn't have a rule on haters, so if you're under attack, the fastest way to get rid of them is to ask your followers to "mark as spam" and they will hopefully disappear.
18) If your profile pic remains an egg, you're unlikely to gain more followers.
19) Contrary to popular belief, not everyone wants to be featured on Spot.ph or its Top Tweets.
20) Another way to gain followers is to give stuff away, but please, don't make it too difficult.
And now the anti-Christ needs a snack, so feel free to add to the Facts of Twitter, so long as you know how to use vowels when you comment.
