SM’s Trash to Cash program encourages shoppers to recycle
“Trash to Cash” is held every first Friday and Saturday of the month at all SM Supermalls. The program invites families to bring in scrap papers and cardboard, empty ink toner cartridges, plastic bottles and scraps, used lead batteries from cars, aluminum, tin cans and many other items, in exchange for cash.
Part of the proceeds will go towards buying trash bins, which will be donated to different public schools to spread the practice of proper waste disposal to youths all over the country.
Launched three years ago, Trash to Cash has enabled SM Supermalls to save 29,000 seven-year old trees, recycle almost 700 tons of waste and save as much as 4,311 cubic meters in landfill space. At the same time, it has generated P19 million for those who have traded in their recyclables.
For its efforts in promoting recycling, SM was recognized the “Champion for Re-use/Recycle” by the Zero Basura Olympics (ZBO) during its Earth Day celebration at the SM Mall of Asia Complex.
Bestowed by the DENR Secretary Horacio C. Ramos, the award is part of the DENR's ZBO program, which recognizes the best practices in waste management and gauges companies’ compliance to RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
The Green Bag Project
SM Supermarket, the country’s largest supermarket chain, recently celebrated its 25th anniversary by launching the Green Bag Project, encouraging the use of recyclable bags through the My Own Bag (MOB) campaign.
Since May 2009, the SM Green Bag Project has aimed to reduce the use of plastic bags which add up to the country’s waste problem.
The bags were made available to shoppers through a buy one-take one promo from its original price of PHP 35.
The SM Green Bag is made from 100% polypropylene (PP) material, which is recyclable, non-toxic, allergy free and non-reactive to human skin. The SM Green Bag’s size is equivalent to two regular SM Supermarket Shopping bags and has an estimated lifespan of two years.
