Named the first National Artist in Fashion Design in 2006, Valera was popular from the 1930s to '60s for dressing Manila's elite, brides, celebrities, and First Ladies in elegant gowns and ternos.
He is credited for innovating the terno, making it one piece and doing away with the tapis and panuelo. (Wiki)
