Back in the day (early ’80s for me and my classmates) there was no Internet, no digital cameras, and all those gadgets that keep kids occupied today.
My high school classmates and I actually dressed up and went to the theater—in our case, Repertory Philippines. We had silly crushes on actors like Audie Gemora and Raymond Lauchengco (before he went mainstream and joined the cast of Bagets).
Forty-five years ago two women dreamed of giving Filipinos a chance to watch world-standard plays in their own country. Armed with this passionate desire, Zeneida Amador and Baby Barredo Miss Julie in front of seven people.
Thus began Repertory Philippines Foundation, Inc. which marks its 75th season this 2012.
To celebrate, Repertory Philippines mounts the Broadway and West End hit musical, Jekyll and Hyde, top billed by theater stalwart Michael Williams and rock icon Jet Pangan alternating in the lead role.
An evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil, Jekyll & Hyde is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart.
Convinced that the cure for his father’s mental illness lies in the separation of Man’s evil nature from his good, Dr. Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of late 19th century London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde.
Jett Pangan plays the lead role on opening night: March 16, 2012 at 8 PM.
