The first piece, which Ms. Salonga wore for her opening night on June 7th, was a full-length gown of punched silk in black, with a V-neckline and keyhole detail on the back. It was accented with a sash, beaded with hammered gold.
The second piece was a crimson crepe full length gown with a pin-tucked bodice and sleeves.

Wagyu burgers for Father’s Day

In my experience, Dad is harder to find a gift for than Mom.
As a girl, I really have to guess what men want. I’ve given up buying stuff for my husband because he’s really a simple guy.
Or maybe he’s complicated. I can never can tell if he will like this shirt or that shoe.
When he left this morning, he said he would take the Simple Guy quiz in the car.
One thing he does love are steaks and burgers.
Just like my Dad. If burger is on the menu, he’ll have that. If it’s Wagyu, so much the better.

Jones wagu beef burger with chips

For Father’s Day, Melbourne Prime now offers 100% Premium Australian Wagyu Burgers as a new addition to its Wagyu range.
The burgers are finely textured with a rich Wagyu flavor.
At 180 g. per portion, they’re large enough to satisfy even those with a hearty appetite.

The burgers are easy to prepare. Even at the last minute you can cook them straight from the freezer.
Just pop them into a hot, smoking pan, cook until juices run clear—which means they’re well done (or to 75ºC if you have a digital thermometer). Apart from being convenient, cooking from frozen also means you get a nice, crunchy crust.
Serve with your favorite toppings and enjoy.

Melbourne Prime’s Signature Wagyu Burger Gift Box is available at Php 2,975.
What’s In The Box:
A stack of seven 100% Australian Wagyu burger patties
Murray River gourmet salt flakes
Melbourne Prime’s own legendary burger seasoning
A portion of choice French Brie cheese (Quick tip: pop a couple of slices on the burger patty while the last side is cooking so you get that nice cheese “melt”.)

Father’s Day is fast approaching, so order your gift box by emailing sales@melbourneprime.com or messaging them on Twitter or Facebook.

You can also buy them at the Melbourne Prime store, open Monday to Friday from 10 AM-6 PM only.

Are you a Complicated Girl?

“Filipino men like uninteresting girls because they’re intimidated by anything they don’t think they can control. Kasi if the girl is rather unique, it means they have a strong personality. From my observation, Filipino men cannot handle girls with a lot of personality. Mahilig sila sa sunod-sunuran. Think: a girl who will look pretty and occasionally give a ladylike laugh as she looks on while you and your drinking buddies have a drunken good time. Actually, better yet, she’s the one serving the drinks to you and your buddies. From what I’ve seen, Filipina girls with strong personalities are either single, married to/dating foreigners, or married to/dating Filipino men who are quite unconventional themselves.”

According to this Complicated Girl Index, I am only 79.5% complicated—shocking!!
Now take the quiz. Give yourself 1 point for each of the 100 traits listed below.
Give yourself .5 if it only half applies. If you score 75 and up, you’re complicated.

Your Php 3,500 for a good cause

Dear Kind Reader,
I’m helping out colleague and school mate Bea Ledesma and her batch mates at Assumption College High School Batch 1999 raise funds to help as many students finish high school at St. Vincent’s Academy in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte—a poor, war-torn area in Mindanao.

DSC05131

Together with the Religious of the Assumption, the school strives to educate the children of Kauswagan academically, emotionally, and spiritually. The children are taught the importance of seeking and keeping peace through various activities such as the yearly Peace Camps.
Keeping children in school gives them the education and skills they need to succeed in life. However, it is important to send children to schools such as SVA because there they are taught the values they will need to grow into good, peace-loving adults.

DSC05130

For only Php 3,500, you can send a child to school in SVA for an entire school year.
Your contribution can change a child’s life and put him or her on the path to a peaceful, well-lived life.
Many of the children in Kauswagan are desperate to go to school but lack the means to do so.
Instead of buying say, a new pair of shoes or a top, why not sponsor a new scholar through the ACHS Batch 99 Scholarship Program?
If you have three other friends willing to sponsor, all four of you can sponsor one student for the entire high school’s four years at by donating Php 3,500/person.

Besides scholarship money, the school desperately needs:
1. a working clinic
2. more (up to date) computers

DSC05128

3. more reading materials in the library

DSC05126

4. refurbishing the muslim prayer room
5. higher teachers’ salaries
6. SRA or Student Record Books

If you’d like to sponsor a child, deposits can be made to BPI account # 3769 0508 75
Account Name: Gladys Santiago or Christine Laumond

Please email your deposit slip to achs99@gmail.com so they can track your donation and assign you to a child. Or email them directly if you’d like to help out in other ways such as donating in kind (books, computers, etc.)

To know more about the project, go to http://achs99.tumblr.com/

Malas

Last month was not the best for me health-wise. I had to do a lot of medical exams (I’m not yet done) and as usual I scared myself (and Jeroen) nearly to death.
I thought I had discovered a “scary” lump inside my throat and thought of the worst.
Jeroen and I decided to pray and fast. He gave up coffee, steak and massage for one month. As for me, he suggested I give up shopping—except for essentials.
So apart from the groceries and school supplies, I haven’t shopped for about three weeks now.
I am not allowed to shop until July 7, when I join the annual Hong Kong sale season.

Stopping shopping is not as hard as a I thought. It is harder for me to give up food or drink because cravings are really hard to control.
But not shopping is OK. Just don’t enter the stores, or if you do, make a mental note to come back. Chances are you’ll go home feeling no less empty or fulfilled. You’re just the same person without the additional clutter you’re bringing home (it also doesn’t hurt that I always get swag, so I’m always surrounded by gifts).

About four years ago I read this book called Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping, where author Judith Levine and her husband decided to experiment not buying anything but essentials for a year.
That meant searching the cupboards for things they can use before buying new ones, for example shampoos nicked from hotel stays.

not-buying-it

That’s one of things I’ve been doing. I ran out of my favorite Murad concealer and instead of buying a new one, I’m getting by with Benefit concealers. I’m going to run out soon of my favorite Murad facial wash so I’m going to use my Neutrogena facial wash instead.

Grace and I kind of window shopped tonight at Podium. Normally I couldn’t walk out of a mall without buying something.
I contemplated buying 4 pillows + 2 free, but figured I could wait until July 7th. Whenever I tell friends I’m not shopping they can hardly believe it. But I’m actually liking myself this way.

Here’s the bad part: after Podium, I asked Grace to come with me to the nearest Citibank to pay my bills.
I wasn’t thinking. I pulled my Citibank dollar ATM card by mistake and paid a BDO credit card bill worth Php 27,400—using hard-earned dollars instead of pesos. It was too late when I realized my error.
Grace and I tried to call Citibank and BDO (she is a banker) but no one could help us.
I was thinking:
1) What if I had made a mistake and punched a wrong amount or overpaid an extra digit? What if I lost all the dollars I’ve been saving up for years and no one could help me?
2) What if I were a thief and used someone’s ATM card to pay my bills? That money would be gone forever?

Anyway, charge it to experience, said my Twitter friends. I have now separated my Citibank dollar ATM and returned it to the safe where it belongs.
That said, I really hate robotic call center agents who have no heart. I really want to kill them (see Complicated Girl Index below).
Is there anyone from Citibank or BDO who could shed light on what could’ve been done?
I’ve already cancelled my BDO credit cards out of frustration. Anyway, I am trying not to shop.

Getting an endorsement by Chuvaness doesn’t guarantee online winnings.
As you know, I couldn’t even make myself win against the powers of Tim Yap and Divine Lee.
That’s why I have to choose whomever I endorse. It has to be worth the effort.
This time around, I’m asking you to vote for Kerin Ching (L) and Niña Sandejas, who have joined the Clean & Clear search for their Asia Campaign.

Kerin ChingNiña Sandejas

You may recognize them as the two girls who baby sat my son when we were away.

Niña is a photojournalist who has traveled all over the Philippines and Asia to interview and photograph local and international bands.
In her spare time, she shares knowledge of her craft by conducting classes and workshops.
Kerin, on the other hand, is a preschool teacher (simple girl!) who models from time to time.
After realizing her true passion is teaching toddlers, less-fortunate, and special needs kids, Kerin has decided to take up her masters degree in Special Education which she is currently finishing at the University of the Philippines.

Niña and Kerin

The two have been best friends for almost a decade. It started when an edgy-looking Niña noticed a quirky-dressed Kerin in the hallways of their school. At that time Niña wanted to become a fashion designer, while Kerin dreamed of a career in advertising.
But as their friendship grew, so did their interests. It’s amazing how both followed their dreams, yet kept their friendship intact through the years.

Joining the Clean & Clear search was Kerin’s idea. When she mentioned it to Niña, she was surprised and excited that Niña thought it was great. Besides knowing it would be fun, both saw an opportunity to grow more in their friendship—win or lose.
The girls are thrilled to try something they have never done before.

Niña and Kerin

Clean & Clear is searching for a pair of best friends who are confident, unique and of course, have clean and clear skin.
Winners of the Philippine leg will be part of local ads and webisodes.
They will also represent the country in a regional contest in Singapore and will be up against winners from Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore.
You can vote once a day until July 12, 2011.

Here’s how:
1. LIKE Clean & Clear Philippines here: http://www.facebook.com/cleanclearphilippines
2. Click here to vote for Kerin and Nina: http://apps.facebook.com/cleanclearph/gallery/81/

What makes KFC sogood?

$

Before KFC hit Philippine shores, there was Max’s Fried Chicken— piping hot, wrapped in aluminum foil, and served with banana ketchup.
We used to eat that in my (grandmother) Mama’s house in Quezon City.
This is where the kids used to eat. You can see the dining room in the back, that’s where I ate Max’s on a tin foil.

Papa's house

Years later, when Kentucky Fried Chicken was introduced in the Philippines, we all had to try. We ordered a bucket, which we shared at Mama’s house. My favorite part are the wings. Just give me two wings, rice, Coke and I’m a happy camper.
Would you believe I ate KFC everyday for four years? They used to offer a “brown bagger” for Php 35 back the ’80s, which was one thigh (original recipe) with mash and gravy inside a brown paper bag.
I used to buy that everyday after school. If I had saved all the money I spend on takeout food instead of eating at home, I could probably buy a log cabin by now…

I had to try Vietnamese KFC

Sometime in the ’90s, they found out fried wasn’t sogood. They dropped the name “Kentucky Fried Chicken” and called it KFC.
With so many food choices, I no longer eat KFC everyday, but there are days I really crave for chicken coated in 11 herbs and spices. Just give me two or three wings, rice, Coke and I’m good to go. Don’t forget the gravy.
Every time I have to attend a long, fancy dinner or a wedding that takes up your entire day only to eat tedious food, I always say, “I’d rather have KFC.” Because it’s fast, simple and oh sogood.

KFC chicken was originally developed by Colonel Sanders in 1940 in Kentucky.
I’ve tried KFC in other cities like Hong Kong, New York, Tokyo, Ho Chi Min and Houston to name a few.
It doesn’t taste exactly the same in each country, but I’m happy to report that the Philippines’ KFC is really tasty.
What’s more gravy is refillable for free when you dine in-store, compared with Hong Kong where gravy isn’t free.

KFC wings

Everyone has their favorites. My kids love their Funshots, my husband prefers hot and spicy chicken breast.
If you prefer bread, there are Twisters wraps and spicy Zinger sandwiches.

Wash down with KFC Krushers or finish with a brownie.
Let’s not forget KFC’s most sinful offering, the Double Down, which has two chicken patties, bacon, cheese and special sauce.

As part of this, KFC Philippines is giving its customers the chance to share sogood moments through its website and official Facebook page, where KFC buckets are up for grabs, for you to share with families or friends.
