Magakaribal recap: Week 1, Episode 2

0
0
Sorry I wasn't paying attention tonight because Lia was yakking on the phone with me.
But here's what I gathered—and correct me if I'm wrong.
Thinking her younger sister was dead, the elder kid-turned-child prostitute was looking for tricks in the park when she was picked up by a man with a pornstache, played by Allan Paule.

Allan Paule

He takes her to his home. In the privacy of his bedroom, the kid strips off her waffle bathrobe, to the horror of the man who is apparently gay.
He is not interested in her body after all, but in helping out the child whom he thought was pretty.
He changes her name to Victoria Valera, with the intention of adopting her and taking her to the U.S.

The younger sister Angela—now known as Gelai—was sequestered by a syndicate that kidnaps children and turns them into beggars.
This whole segment was a tired mess, with poverty/tortured children/mean adults or clichés, that we'll just have to cut the crap.
I do have to say that my two boys, being fans of shows like Kokey and Santino, were transfixed, while I continued to yak with Lia, until all the kidnapped children decided to escape but not without releasing Gelai, who was left hanging upside down by her torturers.

Gelai ends up in the home of a poor couple who adopts her. The mother is played by a Arlene Muhlach who is coiffed to the nines and needs to attend Lee Strasberg to know that one needn't shout all her lines to make a point.

Arlene Muhlach

While the sewing machine spins, the camera focuses on a child's hand that turns into an adult hand with bracelets, and voila! Gelai the kid is now Bea Alonzo!
Salamat naman.
She combs through Divisoria like an expert, followed by admirer, Enchong Dee.

I am not certain if Enchong Dee was one of the kids she befriended while being kidnapped.
I do know that this Bea-Enchong love angle is realistic because when I was designing clothes many years ago, I had an admirer in Divisoria, who was unfortunately dark, pudgy and bald.
As I recounted this story to Jeroen, he said, "How do you know he had a crush on you?"
Me: "Every time I would enter the store all the salesgirls would tease him. Duh!"

Enchong Dee
My admirer did not look like Enchong Dee okay.

So the next thing, Gelai is now a designer and faced with a customer who needed alterations on an ugly purple dress. Gelai does a scene out of Coco Chanel the movie and suggests cutting off the sleeves and lowering the neckline.
The last scene, Enchong sneaks Gelai into the backstage of a fashion show that had half-naked models, frou-frou dresses and scary accessories na ayaw ni Olivia Palermo.
Kelly Cutrone would have a fit.

Kelly Cutrone, Olivia Palermo

And then Jeroen was bugging me because Japan-Paraguay was on, so I had to change the channel.
Go Nederland!

Today's festivities

Woke up at 10:30 AM to catch the inauguration rites on TV.
Charice, wearing the dead sea scrolls, certainly made my morning.
Was it inspired by Walt Disney?

Equally daunting were the wallpaper barong Tagalogs of laos nAPO sila.

Luckily after 12 noon, President Aquino was sworn and and giving his inaugural address.
He swore to abolish wang-wangs on the road.
"He is growing on me," tweeted Saab Maglona. And I tend to agree.

My boys and I were just dumbstruck, however, to see the naked guy during the rites.
Even though he's supposed to be an Igorot, I find it highly inappropriate. Good thing he looked very ordinary—read: not Cristiano Ronaldo.

I was planning to write more but I've got a splitting headache. Besides the best things can't be blogged because people generally get mad around here. So I'll save the best for my friends and fam, and to all a good night.

Magkaribal recap: Week 1, Episode 3

0
I shall try my best to recap tonight's episode, because I had a major, major headache about my son's school bag and SM Megamall—and that deserves a post of its own.

So basically now all the kids are out of the show.
Gelai (Bea Alonzo) and Enchong Dee are at Greenbelt 5's Fashion Walk to watch a show of Vera Couture (aka, Angel Aquino).
Nakakatakot ang mga mowdel! Ayaw ni Kelly Cutrone! She would have a major fit!!

Magkaribal

So after the show Gelai overhears that Vera is looking for a new design assistant, so she makes it a point to apply for the job in person. Upon getting there (Vera's office is at the One School in Makati), she finds out that she needs to bring a sample of her work and come back.
But not before witnessing Vera's entrance, a la Meryl Streep in "The Devil Wears Prada" where everyone's practically shaking in terror.

Gelai goes home to her screaming bitch whale of a mom (Arlene Muhlach) and proceeds to sew her sample.
The following day she rushes out to her job interview, but not before being stopped for a kiss and hug by her adoptive father, whom I boldly predict will die—because that's what happens to nice dads in telenovelas.
Gelai takes a jeep to Vera's design studio where Vera has two gay bungling assistants, one of whom is my friend RS Francisco!

Gelai sits in a classroom with other applicants while Vela begins the interrogation. The first question she throws out is, "What was your inspiration?"
One applicant who could barely speak English said she was inspired by New York and her studies at "Parzun" School of Design while the other one said she was inspired by "the paintings of Vincent van Gow and Jackson Palak."

Gelai is highly intimidated by the girls who were obviously "more sophisticated" than her.
When Vera asks what inspired her, Gelai could only mutter, "my inspiration is my family...."
Hearing her lame answer the two bungling gays show her the door, but Vera is touched wants to hear more. Gelai spills some sentimental crap about the hum of the sewing machine, memories of her mom and sister and shit like that, and then when Vera sees her actual sample, she shows her the door.

Next scene, Victoria the older sister (aka Gretchen Barretto) is somewhere abroad wearing sexy lingerie while packing her red Goyard trunk. Her gay benefactor is now played by Robert Arevalo, but we are very confused because why is he watching her pack in her undies? Are they lovers or sewing mates?
Victoria tells him she is packing because it's time to go home.

They arrive at NAIA 2 with tons of Louis Vuitton and Goyard luggage which are real, while Gretchen Barretto channels Victoria Beckham in her sunglasses and fuchsia crocodile Birkin.
(NAIA photos: Karl Henson/CHOS)

Victoria is swarmed by the media, particularly reporter Phoemela Barranda.
Asked what it feels like to be back, Victoria removes her sunglasses revealing unmoving facial features and says, "It feels....fabulous...."
While not too far away, a skinhead on a motorbike watches, and it is....Derek Ramsey.

Guess what happened at Forever 21?

Last night we were invited to a private event/shopping party at Forever 21 in Megamall.

IMG_0645

Grace and I had already chosen our stuff in advance two weeks ago, so it was a relief when manager Lui Saporsantos spotted me and handed us our loot.

IMG_0646

The private event was quite civilized. Nobody ran, panicked or hoarded (as in H&M x Comme des Garçons in Tokyo).
People lined up for the fitting rooms and cash registers.
(Don't worry. Marami pang natira.)

IMG_0642

The country's richest man, Mr. Henry Sy, was there in a wheelchair witnessing the successful opening. (I did not take a picture.)
Models dressed in Forever 21 walked and posed around the store, dressed by an American stylist who flew in for the opening.

Spotted were Jasmine and Ria

For those of you not going to the Preview ball, let me entertain you with photos from last night's Bench Uncut at the Araneta Coliseum.
Tickets said 8 PM, so we planned to leave the house at at 6 PM in order to have a traditional dinner at Café Bola. But Harold was stuck in traffic. We arrived at Cafe Bola around 7:30 PM. I was already starving. But the waiter forgot my order, so we were delayed further.
I thought I would still have time to go around and take photos of the people, but when we got there, the place was already dark and bathed in theater lights.
These are my personal photos. On Wednesday I'll be doing the full coverage for the Philippine Star.

"Are you planning to watch this every night?" Jeroen inquired anxiously on Thursday as I flipped channels to ABS-CBN's fashion cheesefest, Magkaribal.
"No not every night. I'm watching Bench tomorrow night."

Why Ciara Sotto-Oconer must be killed*

0
0
Mich Dulce has given us a good reason to hate on Ciara Sotto—but we won't because Ciara is a sweet young lady—never mind that she can pole dance and has a 23" waistline.
Read about Mich Dulce's corsetry in the Inquirer, but please don't order now. The wait list is a bit long and Mich needs to rest her hands.

Ciara Sotto wears Mich Dulce's corsets

Lose those inches-with a Mich Dulce corset
By Marge C. Enriquez

WITH THE AID OF A CORSET, so snugly laced at the torso, singer-actress Ciara Sotto-Oconer had a 20.5-inch waistline on her wedding day.
The corset, made by her best friend, designer Michelle “Mich” Dulce, gave her fuller hips and raised her breasts upwards, providing ample cleavage.
As the 29-year-old designer’s muse, Sotto was Dulce’s first corseted bride. Her bridal outfit was a corset and a skirt, cleverly draped to look like a single gown. Starting with a 25-inch waistline, Ciara diligently wore a training corset a month before her wedding last January. The waistline got tinier and the tummy got flatter over time.

Ciara Sotto-Oconer

“You feel full most of the time, but you still have to eat. Otherwise, you’ll get dizzy,” says Ciara. Her sister commented that Ciara looked like a soldier, as the corset, made with steel boning, forced her to sit and stand erect. Her nephew thought she wouldn’t make it on her wedding day as she looked so fragile.
Before the big day, the groom, Joselito “Jojo” Oconer, COO of a film production company, declared he didn’t have the patience to unfasten the strings of her corset. Dulce offered him scissors to cut them on their wedding night and promised to replace the broken strings.
However, for sentimental value, Ciara refused. After the wedding reception, the yaya did the tedious job of unlacing it.

Ciara Sotto

Ciara is just one among many who go to Dulce for her corsetry. Topping the list is Gretchen Barretto, who wore it on the pilot telecast of “Magkaribal.”
Aside from celebrities, there are women who order the corsets for help with their scoliosis or other orthopedic reasons.
Dulce’s foray into corsetry was born out of her fondness for vintage fashion. After studying her basics in fashion at Central St. Martin’s in England, she went on to study millinery.
“I collected hats, but nobody knew how to make them here,” she said. Studying the history and rudiments of hats fueled her fetish for period clothing.
Dulce became fascinated with corsets upon meeting celebrity stripper and fashion icon Dita Von Teese, who came to Manila in 2008. Von Teese had a 24-inch waistline. But with a corset, it whittled down to 18 inches.

Dita von Teese

Last year, Dulce enrolled in an intensive course on corsetry at the London College of Fashion.
“Nowadays, anything with boning is referred to as a corset,” she says. “A real corset needs lacing. It must be historically correct. You can use practically any fabric. What’s important are the bust (underwire) and the steel boning which I import from the UK.”
Dulce, who occasionally lapses into a British accent, has also adopted the British work ethic of doing it properly or not doing it at all.
“I can’t teach this to anyone. I do everything myself. It’s very technical and mathematical. The proportions have to be accurate,” she explains.
To achieve the hourglass figure, there is a ratio of the bust to the waist. “If you’re not accurate, you don’t get the silhouette.”

Ciara Sotto wears Mich Dulce's corsets

It takes a day for Dulce to make the pattern, and two weeks to make the corset because the techniques are centuries old.
“It should be at least 90-percent perfect for the first fitting,” she says.
It takes another two weeks to make the adjustments. “If it breaks, you have to start all over again.”
Hence it takes a month for a bespoke corset, which can cost as much as a Blackberry.
In this age of high-tech foundation garments, corsets still reign supreme in reshaping the body. Initially, they take two to three inches off the waistline. Over time, they take four to six inches off. Aside from modifying the waistline, corsets can either push up flat chests or give them a rounder profile. A corset can also tame fuller bosoms.

Mich Dulce

Dulce’s tips for women to avoid suffering for a small waist: Break in the corsets a month before; stay in an air-conditioned room; wear a camisole under the corset to avoid bruising. Avoid double knots as they are difficult to unfasten when you’re in hurry to free yourself from the initial discomfort.
A corset can also be worn as outerwear, such as with Ciara’s bridal outfit. It can peep under a jacket or layered over a shirt.
Dulce has a long waiting list for her corsets, partly because she spends six months in the UK. She participates in London Fashion Week and Spitalfield Market crafts fair, presenting her hats made from sinamay and meeting up with clients for her designs.
From designer to milliner and now corsetiére, Dulce’s got her creativity all tied up.

The World Cup has been keeping me up, ever since I discovered FIFA was full of FAFAs.
But my poor aching bones this morning are worth it because Netherlands won against Uruguay last night! I'm so sorry Anna and Luis!
Netherlands was the underdog in these games because it has been 32 years since they entered the finals, so for them to make it this far is so awesome.

A small group of us have been Secreting for Netherlands to win the World Cup. The "Believe" movement was started by our friend Kevin Ching, and I made these low-tech avatars, which you are welcome to use.
The crude design was made by me, and Jeroen predicted the scores, which are never true, but nevertheless gives us something to focus on.

ons-orange Believe!

On July 2, Netherlands won against Brazil 2-1 and last night Netherlands won from Uruguay 3-2.
Tonight, Germany plays against Spain. The winner of this will battle Netherlands in the World Cup finals on July 12.

If this is so, sorry Jenny and Toby!

Did you know that 13% of the whole Philippine population are estimated to be children with special needs?
Special children are kids diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, blindness/visual impairment, cerebral palsy, deafness, developmental disabilities or mental retardation, Down Syndrome, epilepsy, speech disorders, among others.

Now, Big&Small Group, the umbrella company of clothing brands Big&Small, Spin, Orange Juice, and H.A.B. Maternity and More, partners with Working Mom magazine to support the Let it Shine Foundation and raise awareness on children with special needs.
The Let it Shine Foundation provides a scholarship fund to financially assist a pool of scholars enrolled in its Shine Intervention Center Educational Study Program.

To aid the program, Big & Small Group has created five specially designed shirts so that kids can show their support.
Priced from PHP 445-PHP 575, sales of the shirts will benefit the the Let It Shine Foundation Scholarship Fund.
